Shopping from Hanks Clothing ... Made My Father Happy!

My father had one wish for his birthday. He wanted some western shirts. The kind that have snaps down the front rather than buttons. He has always enjoyed this style shirt. However, awhile ago he had a stroke (he is in his seventies), so the snap front is definitely easier for him to manage than trying to wrestle buttons into buttonholes. Only I was having a difficult time finding affordable western shirts that were in stock so that I could buy them!
That’s when I discovered HanksClothing.com. According to their website, they have been in business since 1949. They primarily sell clothing and footwear for men and women with some luggage and an odd mixture of items for the home (such as Alliger’s Wing Sauce and Boudreaux Butt Paste to Zipper Lube and Lint Rollers). Brand names include John Deere clothing, Carhartt clothing, Lee & Levi jeans, Wranger clothing, Acorn slippers & socks, Red Wing boots, Hudson Bay blankets, J.W. Hulme bags & luggage.
Navigating the Website
Hanks Clothing is a simply presented website. It is not out to impress with flash and sparkle.
At the Top & Bottom
A series of text links includes: Home, Wish List, Order Status, Account Login, Feedback. There is also a link for viewing the shopping basket contents as well as an indicator to show how many items are in the basket and the current amount spent. A banner says, “Always free shipping on orders over $99". At the bottom of the page are more links such as tracking shipments and sizing charts.
To the Left
There are navigation links to the main shopping areas: Mens, Womens, Footwear, Home Furnishings, Luggage & Travel, For the Home and Sale. There is also a link to “weekly sales”.
If you wish, there is a section to register for email notices. A section titled Quick Links offers information on Hank’s privacy policy, returns, also to request a catalog ... or to view a website map. The website map is a mess, though. It is one huge list of their products that is unwieldy to wade through.
A search box is also available. I typed in: western shirt. Immediately the site returned two results, one for short-sleeve shirts and one for long-sleeve shirts. How you type the search word definitely matters. Typing in “t-shirt” netted two results. Typing in “tshirt” revealed 26 results.
In the Middle
The middle consists of about a half dozen photographs showing items for sale. There are mini descriptions of the items as well as pricing.
Shopping the Site
Click a link on the left navigation menu to go to a page that breaks out items for that category. For instance, click on “Womens” to open a page with selections for: Acorn slippers for women, Harley Davidson for women, John Deere clothing for women, J W Hulme for women, Ladies work gloves, Muck boots for women, Womens Jeans, Ladies socks. The Mens link offers 19 categories to the 8 Womens categories.
Each product page contains the same navigational links on the left side while the product picture and information is in the middle of the page.
For the western shirt, I was able to read the description and see that the shirts have the Wrangler label. The material content was listed as well as the welcome information that the shirt had no shrinkage and required no ironing. The item number and price are prominently displayed. Whooohooo! These shirts are only $17.95 each. It made me nervous that I could not choose the color, unlike other items of clothing on the site. Apparently these Wrangler shirts arrive at the store in an assortment. There is an area where I can type in the colors I prefer to receive. So I typed in 1) blues, 2) browns and ordered several shirts. The sizes ranged from medium to 3X ( the 3X size is a Tall size). I then chose the quantity and selected the “Buy Now” button.
If you want to share an item with a friend, there is a button labeled “Tell A Friend”. This opens a form page where you can fill in an email address and write a comment to share the item you found with others.
Checking Out
It is easy to change quantities or remove items from the shopping cart. I like that the standard shipping charge is displayed and added in to show a realistic total. Only orders shipped to New York are charged sales tax. There is a button to calculate Express shipping if you need it.
Standard Shipping fees are:
zero - $10.00 -- $3.95 shipping
$10.01 - $25.00 -- $5.95 shipping
$25.01 - $50.00 -- $7.95 shipping
$50.01 - $99.00 -- $8.95 shipping
Over $99 -- free shipping (except to Alaska, Hawaii & PO Boxes)
To pay for the items, just click the “Check Out” button. A page opens where there is the option of registering. You can order without registering, but you won’t be able to check your order status online.
The order process is just like other websites where name, address, phone and email are requested. Hanks Clothing accepts MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover. To help protect identity theft, the website also requires the 3- or 4-digit number from the back of the credit card.
I did not receive an email order confirmation. However, I did receive an email when my order shipped. The email included what items shipped, how they shipped (UPS Ground in this case), and also included the tracking number.
Returns & Exchanges
Hanks does not set a time limit on returning or exchanging items. They also do not charge a restocking fee.
Receiving the Shipment
I was happily surprised at how quickly the order arrived. Of course, it only shipped from New York to Massachusetts. The shirts arrived in a gray heavy-duty plastic bag. Each shirt was on a hanger and covered with a clear plastic bag (something like a dry-cleaner bag only made from stiffer plastic).
The clothing quality is excellent, and the shirt fit my father well. I was really pleased that Hanks Clothing sent the exact colors I had requested.
Summary
HanksClothing.com is easy to order from. Their shipment was on time and in good condition. My father enjoyed the shirts so much that he asked me to order more of them for him as a Christmas present!
