| evan_mit's Full Review: Crash Team Racing for PlayStation 1 |
Crash team racing is a great game with great modes.
Adventure Mode
OK, this is the main "single player" mode for the game. You choose a character and race around tracks. To unlock more tracks, you must win current races in 1st place. There are Boss races where you must beat an opponent who has lots of weapons. There are also CTR races where you must pick-up the letters C T and R and still win the race. This is a great mode with no real weaknesses.
Time Trial
In time trial mode, you race around any unlocked tracks (from adventure mode) and try and beat your best time. There is a ghost cart for competing against. Although going really really fast is fun, this mode has no point.
Versus Mode
In Versus mode, you race against up to 3 friends. This mode is good in the sense that some racing games just let you try and get a better time in time trial mode. You can use powerups on each other and just have fun. A great mode.
Battle Mode
The best mode in the game! In battle mode, you battle against up to 3 friends. This is great and a variety of tracks can be accessed from the start. There are weapons placed around the level, which you can shoot at your opponent. This mode will have you playing for weeks if not years!
Weapons
There are a variety of weapons in CTR. Apples can be picked up around the track and when you have 10 your powerup gets um... powered up. Weapon descriptions will have a nonpoweredup/powered up format
Bombs: shoots a bomb/shoots a faster bomb
Bombs come 3 at a time or 1 at a time. Bombs do not home in on the target.
Missile: shoots a homing missile/ Missile homes better
Missiles are great for revenge. When fired, they lock in on a target and make a beeping sound. They can lock in from the other side of the level. Come in packs of 3 or 1.
Potion: Drops potion A/Drops potion B
When you hit potion A, your kart spins out.
When you hit potion B, you spin out and a rain cloud slows your kart down.
Ooga-Booga: Ooga-Booga protects you/protects longer
Ooga-Booga is that guy with a wood face from previous Crash games. He gives you a speed boost and spins out anyone who you hit with your cart.
Note: His name is not really Ooga-Booga
Speedup: Speeds you up/speeds you up more
A basic speed boost.
Nitro: Drops a nitro crate/TNT crate
When you run over a Nitro crate, you must continually jump to avoid being blown up. This is really annoying and is a real advantage to your opponents. TNT explodes on impact (no jumping involved)
Power Orb: Creates a tempory Orb/Permanent Orb
When you use an Orb, A sphere appears around your character and you can take 1 hit from anyone. You can also fire it (and lose it) at opponents to hit them. Great!
