This movie was very underrated! Folks thought it was supposed to be a serious account of the old west. Maybe it was :) Whatever it was supposed to be it is one of my favorite comedies! Hesston and Keith play two old fur trappin mountain men. They encounter everything you can possibly imagine! They constantly argue with each other on weather it's Black feet or Crow Indians following them. Then they run out of Whiskey, this is a bad thing!

A farmer and gold prospector team up and head for the California gold fields! One of the first things they do is buy a wife. Then of course they both fall in love with her.
Eventually they do get to do some gold mining but not in the fashion you are thinking of. This old comedy has plenty of whisky, beer, prostitutes, boomtowns and some very creative gold mining!

{Quotes from Paint Your Wagon}
Mrs. Fenty: You should read the Bible, Mr. Rumson.
Ben Rumson: I have read the Bible, Mrs. Fenty.
Mrs. Fenty: Didn't that discourage you about drinking?
Ben Rumson: No, but it sure killed my appetite for readin'!

Ben Rumson: Now, don't tell me you've never been with a woman.
Horton: No, sir I haven't.
Ben Rumson: Well, that, that's terrible! Did you know you could go blind?
