Ten More!

The Bottom Line See these movies! They're great!
If you read my first Top Ten review (Only ten?! http://www.epinions.com/content_1211277444), you will recall that I lamented the fact that I could only include 10 movies. At the end of the review I added some that I felt deserved inclusion. Well, now is as good a time as ever to add to that list. So here goes...
Again, these are not the 10 best movies of all time, they are simply movies that I feel are worth watching, not ranked in order, but put out there for all to see and enjoy. So, enjoy!
10. Hoosiers
C'mon, tell me that this one doesn't get you going?! The heartwarming story of Indiana basketball starring Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper. The picket fence play! The fight in the gym! Drunk Dennis Hopper become the cleanedup coach! It has all the markings of an ESPN Classic -- oh wait, it already is!
9. Braveheart
FREEDOM!!! I'll tell you what, when our man Mel gutted out those words as his guts were literally being taken out, it was hard to choke back the tears. Mel makes a good historical flick (I'm thinking also of The Patriot and Gallipoli. This two-tape epic of the Scottish fight for freedom is a must see, if only for the mass mooning!
8. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Not only is Jack Nicholson one of my favorite actors of all times, but he's one of the best. Here, in this multi-Academy Award winning Milos Forman film, we see Jack at his lunatic (literally) best. This adaptation of Ken Kesey's phenomenal book is fairly faithful and includes some amazing supporting performances by a nearly unrecognizable Danny Devito, Christopher Lloyd, Scatman Carruthers and others. The Big Chief busting through the glass and the haunting saw-blade soundtrack are also tear-jerkers.
7. Casablanca
THE MOVIE CLASSIC! I finally saw this one just a year or two ago and it truly lived up to the billing. Bogart and Becall! And Claude Rains! "I am shocked, shocked to find gambling here!" "Here are your winnings inspector!" That's a scene I rewound a couple of times. This movie delivered on every count and is a must see.
6. The Entire Run of Sean Connery's James Bond
This is a cheat, I know, but you really can't pick just one of the Sean Connery James Bonds. From Dr. No to Never Say Never Again you'll laugh with James' wit, you'll ooo and aah at the hot chicks, and you'll marvel at the toys Q comes up with. These movies are far and away better than any other of the genre, shaming Roger Moore, George Lazenby, David Niven, Timothy Dalton, and even Pierce Brosnan.
5. History of the World, Part 1
Here's another Mel Brooks inclusion. It's hilarious, from beginning to end, and that's what Mel does, literally covering all of history. Though it's a touch blasphemous, his Old Testament vignette, depicting Moses and his original 15 commandments is hilarious, as is the song and dance number for the Inquisition ("what a show/the Inquisition/here we go/we know you're wishing that we'd go away/but the Inquisition's here and it's here to stay!"). The inside jokes and guest stars are amazing. You'll see: Dom Deluise, Madeline Kahn, Sid Ceasar, Gregory Hines, Harvey Korman, Bea Arthur, Shecky Greene, Hugh Hefner and many, many more. Don't miss it!
4. Duck Soup
This is the other Marx Brother's classic, along with Night at the Opera that every real lover of comedy must see. This send-up of politics and dictatorships features Groucho as Rufus T. Firefly, the dictator of Freedonia, as he and Chico, Zeppo, and Harpo get up to their usual shenanigans. Some classic routines are included, too many to name, but be assured, Groucho will have you rolling in the aisles as he rolls his eyes!
3. Saving Private Ryan
Truly one of the best, and most realistic war movies. I recently read a review of this film here on Epinions and the writer commented on never having been affected emotionally by the beginning of a film. It's incredibly true. The 35 minutes covering the storming of the beach and then the discovery that four Ryan brothers were killed, topped of by General Marshall's recitation of Abraham Lincoln's "Altar of Freedom" letter were inspiring and shocking and incredible all at once. Then there's the cast -- Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel, Barry Pepper, Tom Sizemore, et al. Too good to miss!
2. The Longest Day
Here's another great D-Day flick. Based on Cornelius Ryan's stirring account of D-Day, every one in Hollywood played a role in this two-taper (men at least, there really were no women in the flick). You'll see John Wayne, Sean Connery, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda -- to name but four.
1. Tombstone
In my other movie review, I mentioned Tombstone in relation to El Dorado , naming El Dorado the greatest western of all time. Well, Tombstone certainly rates. With Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot, and a host of other great actors, this film lived up to its billing as well, and has some classic bits and pieces. The Latin duel between Doc Holliday (Kilmer) and Johnny Ringo is classic; "I'm your huckleberry!" is to die for -- and there's too much else to name. Watch it and enjoy!
Some that were left off this time: Gettysburg, Enemy at the Gates, Horse Feathers, Blues Brothers, Animal House, Wayne's World. Oh well, live to fight another day I guess. I hope you enjoy some of these selections if you haven't already!
