My mother and I have stayed at this 3-story hotel twice and both times have been great.
The staff here are friendly and helpful. I was lost on our first visit and instead of just giving directions and hanging up, the young lady at the front desk stayed on the phone with me until she got me back to the hotel...almost 25 minutes. The 2nd visit there was a man at the front desk and we ended having the same favorite author and talked on and on about him and his books. The maids are so friendly and do their jobs very well. In fact, the second visit, I called our maids supervisor to let her know how pleased we were with how clean our room was the entire 5 nights we were there.
Location: 3545 Parkway, Pigeon Forge, TN. It's on the main thoroughfare that runs thru Seiverville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Just a few minutes from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is an easy walk to the Old Mill, Patriot Park, many shops and the main trolley terminal.
Hint: There are trolleys that run to the park outside of town, drop you off and then you wait for the trolley from Gatlinburg to pick you up and take you into Gatlinburg. There is ONE trolley that will take you all the way into Gatlinburg without the stop...make sure you ask the driver which trolley it is for that day if you want to go to Gatlinburg...it'll save time and changing trolleys.
Swimming pools: There is a seasonal outdoor pool that has a slide and a "Fun Umbrella" that sprinkles water down on the swimmers. The indoor pool is heated and open year round with another shallow kids pool for the little ones.
Rooms: You can get anything from a standard room to a balcony room to a jacuzzi suite with fireplace. We stayed in a double queen with balcony room both visits. OUr room wasn't huge, but we had plenty of room to move around and for all of our shopping bags. The beds are somewhat hard, but not so hard that it would give me problems in the morning with my arthritis, as some hard beds do. They are cleaned daily and the maids provide plenty of towels & washclothes and if you need more it just takes a quick call to the front desk. The day before we left we requested our room not be cleaned as we had so much stuff in there, even we weren't sure what needed to go or stay. When we came back there was a plastic bag on our door with extra towels/washclothes and garbage bags for us. The rooms (yes, all rooms) come standard with mini-fridges and a microwave. They both come in handy for having a cold soda on hand and leftovers from eating out re-heated. There is a TV with cable channels and a table with 2 chairs.
The Balcony: You step out onto the balcony thru sliding glass doors. There is a street directly behind the hotel that the balcony looks down onto...but, right across this street is the riverwalk and Little Pigeon River. There are groups of ducks and geese swimming/floating by almost all the time. Another hint: Do NOT buy a loaf of bread at the Old Mill and throw it off your balcony to the ducks, unless you are ready to be quacked at loudly every time you step out. My mom spent more time buying bread and throwing it to them to keep them quiet than feeding herself. (I think she just really like feeding them, tho)
Bathroom: The bathroom isn't large, but your not going to feel cramped in there either if your a large person. The sink is on the outside of the toilet/bath area. I do have to mention the bathroom heater. As we visited in November the first year and October the second year it was quite chilly in Pigeon Forge. We've been to motels that have the heat lamp in the bathrooms.......well the Colonial House has gone one better. In the ceiling with a flip of a switch you have what amounts to a full body blow dryer. The warm air flows out, warms up the bathroom and dries you off as much as the towel does. We think it's great!
I will mention there is a free continental breakfast, but since we never took advantage of it, I can't give an opinion on it.
THE PRICE: We stayed last October, considered peak season in the Smoky Mountains. We paid 79.99/night for the double queen/balcony room. A lot cheaper than some of the other places and a lot cleaner and better maintained (at least from what I saw on the outside) than most of the cheaper motels.
Bottomline: If your expecting a hotel with doormen, designer amenities and a lounge with world class dining... this hotel isn't for you. If you want a hotel that has the little extra things, is clean & comfortable with friendly staff you'll love the Colonial House Motel.
