While doing some shopping the morning before I started Christmas cooking, I ran across Lysol Food Surface Sanitizer. Knowing I had a lot of work in the kitchen ahead of me, I picked up a bottle to help keep my counters sanitized.
What It Is
Lysol Food Surface Sanitizer is a new product on the market that, you guessed it, sanitizes food surfaces. It claims to reduce bacterial cross-contamination and kill 99.999% of bacteria in sixty seconds, including E. Coli and Salmonella. It can be used on any non-porous food surface, such as counter tops, cutting boards (non-wood), high chairs and microwaves and other appliances.
It comes in a 22 fluid ounce container for about $3. Coupons are often available and the store even had one next to it. Lysol Food Surface Sanitizer is to be applied only to pre-cleaned surfaces. After cleaning the area to be sanitized, the product is sprayed six to eight inches from the surface. Then you let it stand for sixty seconds and drain thoroughly. The surface is not to be rinsed.
What I Think
First things first: this is not a cleaner. It is made to kill the bacteria that cleaners do not. That being said, Lysol Food Surface Sanitizer does add time to the kitchen clean-up process by being another bottle that has to be pulled out and used. Not to mention it being another bottle that has to be purchased and stored. However, if it helps protect me and my loved ones against very harmful bacteria, then these are all frivolous points for me.
Lysol Food Surface Sanitizer says it is bleach free, color free, and fragrance free. While it is certainly free of bleach and of color - it's a clear liquid - I do notice a hint of smell to it. Now it's probably not fragrance, but there is a slight almost but not quite chemical smell. It is very faint, so it may not bother those with sensitivities. I actually find it somewhat pleasant, though that may be the part of my brain that thinks if it smells clean, it is.
Since buying this, I have used it on just about anything I can. Mostly it gets used on the counters after preparing foods. But I have used it on my cutting board, in the refrigerator, and in the microwave. Shawn has been known to stick stuff in the microwave without a plate or paper towel underneath which drives me crazy. Now, after using Lysol Food Surface Sanitizer I can feel better about it.
This is the kind of product that is hard to tell how well it works. Without going back to biology class and putting it through microscopic testing, there is really no way to know. As much as I hate to do so, it is really something that I have to put blind faith into and believe it is doing what it says.
Overall I am quite pleased with Lysol Food Surface Sanitizer. It is easy to use and a fair price. Until some credible outside source could convince me that this does not kill the nasty bacteria, I will continue to make using this part of my kitchen routine.
