The Mad Doc's Top Ten Sci-Fi Flicks
Mar 25 '03 (Updated Mar 26 '03)
The Bottom Line Now where did I leave that lazer gun...?
This list is my personal favorites for enjoyment value only, not the ones that were necessarily ground-breaking (although a few were). These ten I can, and do, watch over and over.
They are numbered only so I can keep track of where I'm at in the list, number one is not ineluctably my all time fave...but then again, it just might be! LOL Point is, no particular order here kiddies. Enjoy them all!
1) Mars Attacks! -

Tim Burton's hilarious entry into the genre. A comedy, but dealing with well, Martians attacking Earth. All star cast and a laugh a minute. (neener CrispOne) I watch this when I just want brainless comedy..nothing deep here, just a laugh a minute. It's like visiting an old friend.
2) The Time Machine -

This is George Pal's 1960 version and the best of the two movies based on the book by HG Wells. This is a timeless classic that nobody should miss. Deal with the invention of a time machine and what things may be like in the distant future. I like watching this one when I'm in the mood for relaxing sci-fi. There isn't a lot of stimulating action, so it's a calm good couch-cudle movie.
3) Plan 9 from Outer Space -

Pure Schlock, yes..but what glorious schlock! This is Grade B at it's finest, Bela Lugosi's final hurrah. It's about aliens creating zombie-like creatures on Earth. This is the one I pop back in for groaner effect. Ya gotta keep a good groaner movie around!
4) Forbidden Planet -

Robby the Robot! the hope of a better future, the use of science to "save" humanity, the robot as assistant instead of a menace, and the token girl as a hottie who wears very skimpy clothing and falls in love with everyone. Tramp. I like the story in this one, and I watch it every once in awhile for Robby. He's such a studly robot!
5) Invasion of the Body Snatchers -

Who can forget those ominous pods? Don't fall asleep! You may end up somehow different when you wake up.... Scared me to death as a kid! I watch this one over for nostalgia effect... it's just handy that it also happens to be a damn good movie.
6) Contact -

Jodi Foster as a scientist sent thru a portal to...where? That's for you to decide, really. There are those who argue she met 'God'. I say it was an advanced alien being...one in the same perhaps? *grin* This is the thinker piece. When I'm in the mood for familiar deep flicks, this is the baby.
7) War of the Worlds -
http://www.epinions.com/content_88122035844 (Review by Jankp)
The story that spawned the infamous radio broadcast by Orson Wells that sent folks screaming it was so real. The movie is unforgettable and one that I remember scared me no end as a kid. Loved it then, love it now. Another nostalgia flick, with lots of action.
8) The Matrix -

The Matrix is about the future. It's about the real world. It's about thinking versus knowing. It's about existing. It's about dreams. It's about deja vu. It's about Artificial Intelligence. It's about freeing your mind. As the old saying goes, there's a place for everything, and everything in its place. This one I love the special effects, and the theory of it. Another thinker.
9) 2010: The Year We Make Contact -
http://www.epinions.com/content_26855050884 (Review by Telynor)
Yeah yeah sue me! I liked 2010 better than 2001. I liked them both very much..but the sequel just spoke to me better. Watch them both though, back-to-back. Truthfully, I always watch them both together when I'm in the mood for a slow but deep marathon type of thang.
10) Rocky Horror Picture Show -

Argue all ya want, RHPS may be a lot of other things too, but if it involves aliens in any form, I classify it as Sci-Fi.. Awesome cult flick starring Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter..that lusciously fun sweet transvestite. This one is the choice for just plain fun! I adore the sound track, it energizes me. I admit, I sometimes pop it in and just listen to it when I'm doing other things.
