The Bottom Line It's a good site - just make sure you don't trust it blindly. Check around a bit before making any concrete plans.

There are about a million travel websites out there. Orbitz is the new big kid on the block. And how could they not be big? They're throwing tons of money into television ads, they're advertising on the web, AND they are a conglomerate of several major airlines.
Honestly, this doesn't bother me. I see Orbitz as a good thing. It is much easier to use than many other travel websites, and it is very clear and user-friendly. There are tons of options. The prices are also consistently better than those that I have found on Travelocity. I will continue to use Orbitz, but I will also double check with other websites.
I guess we're all a bit suspicious. It is rumored that Orbitz started because companies like Priceline were stealing all of the action, and the airlines wanted a piece of the pie. That's fine, as long as everyone remains competitive and low fares do exist. Orbitz is better than Priceline because there are reasonable flights listed - you don't have to change planes 3 times or anything like that. You make the choices and pick the options that you want. It's just like being your own travel agent.
What I'm getting at is this is a good service - just make sure you don't trust it blindly. Check around on a few different sites before you actually hand over your plastic.

PART TWO - AUGUST 9, 2001
Well, I have actually BOOKED travel with Orbitz now, and I am quite pleased so far. I found the fare through the Wednesday emails that I get from Smarter Living. There isn't an Epinion for Smarter Living yet, or else I would be the first to write a glowing recommendation. Anyway, the fare listing at Smarter Living told me to book this flight at Orbitz. I did so, and I found the experience very pleasantly surprising. There is a wide variety of flights available. You can enter your frequent flyer information when purchasing your ticket. You can even select the kind of seat that you want, which is great since often last minute bookings leave you in the middle seat. I received a confirmation email with all of my flight information. This user-friendly process, coupled with low fare availability, leaves me feeling much better about Orbitz.
