We Purchased The Philips Boom Box on a Whim
While shopping at Costco today, my husband and I spotted a display of Philips boom boxes. Had the store not bothered to plug in a demo model, we probably wouldn't have purchased it. I have always found that the quality of the radio reception usually suffers inside a large building, but we were amazed at how good it sounded. Even tuning in to other stations, it still had good quality sound.
We looked it over. Let's see - this unit had a radio, CD player, cassette player, and a remote control. How could we go wrong for $59.00??? As I picked it up to put into my shopping cart, I couldn't believe how light weight it was. Now, truthfully, I don't know if that's good or bad, but for what I had in mind I wanted it to be light weight - so that was another plus. We bought the boom box and immediately tried it out the minute we got home. As we put away groceries, we were listening to our favorite music! This is a nice looking portable unit that's easy on the pocketbook! Our 18 year old daughter soon sabotaged our oldies music with her new 'N Sync CD! She really likes this boombox, and uses it more than I do!
Versatility
This Philips boom box was very attractive to me because it was portable. We already have a very nice sound system in our living room, but when I'm in another part of the house I can't hear it (unless I crank up the sound so loud the neighbors might complain!) I like to listen to both the radio and cassettes while I am sitting at my computer, and I like to listen to music when I am in the kitchen cooking dinner. I also listen to alot of sports on the radio, and have up until now used a headset. That works okay, but then I can't hear other people around me. This portable Philips boom box is the perfect answer! It sits on my kitchen bookshelf, but has the versatility to go from room to room with me - that's why I like the fact that it's light weight. I also like to listen to music when I am taking a relaxing bath, and this will fit on my small bathroom counter as well!

Performance
This systems performance wasn't outstanding. It doesn't put out exceptional sound, but for $59 I wasn't expecting it to. It was, however, acceptable. At higher volumes it sounds a bit "tinny" to me, but I don't crank up the volume so this is not a concern of mine.
The bass boost feature is a little disappointing, because I like to hear a lot of base. It did slightly improve the low frequency sounds, but not enough for my tastes.
Drawbacks
The remote control has no on/off buttons. Nor does it have the capability to switch modes from CD to radio or cassette.
Conclusion
This system measures 9x17x6" high. It is a stylish silver and gray color. I will admit, this system doesn't sound like Bose, but then it didn't come with a big price tag either. When we are entertaining or watching our favorite rented movie, the sound system in our living room will always be our best bet. But when I need a small portable system to take from room to room, this Philips portable player is just perfect!
