Howard Johnson – Fort Meyers Beach
February 2000 –
My parents invited my husband and I to go to Fort Meyers Beach, Florida with them for a week. They offered to pay for the hotel room; we just had to pay airfare and personal expenses. My mom had made reservations at Howard Johnson back in November for a suite that included a bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, living room and ocean front view. Since there was a couch that folding out into a bed in the living room, we were able to share the suite.
The initial overall appearance of the suite was very satisfying. The suite was very clean, the balcony with the ocean front view was gorgeous, and the employees seemed enthusiastic about catering to our needs. That all ended once we unpacked.
Our first inconvenience started with towels. This included dishtowels as well as bathroom towels and washcloths. Since there were four of us staying in the room, we obviously needed four towels and four washcloths. There were only two in the bathroom, so my mom called down to the front desk and requested two more of each, plus towels or cloths for the kitchen since there weren’t any to begin with. The person at the front desk was courteous, apologized for the inconvenience and stated the towels would be delivered to our room within an hour. After 3 hours, we still had not received our towels, so I went down to the front desk to pick them up. The gentleman apologized again and said he would have them sent up immediately. Another hour goes by . . . still no towels. I then called down to the front desk again, and we finally received our towels within that hour. The gentleman who delivered them was not pleasant in any way, shape or form, and seemed irritated that we bothered him for towels.
The next morning, we left our suite and went to breakfast, walked up the beach and did a little shopping. When we arrived back to the suite, it was about two in the afternoon. The staff had not cleaned up our suite yet. According to the gentleman at the front desk the night before, our suite was to be cleaned before noon daily. This did not bother us until the door opened at four in the afternoon. The cleaning lady did not knock to see if we were in there, she just came in. She did not apologize either. We reminded her that we needed extra towels as well, but she said she was not allowed to do that; we would have to contact the office. As soon as she left, we called the front desk to request our towels and ask that employees do not just barge into our room. The same gentleman from the night before apologized AGAIN to us and said he’d take care of it. Towels were delivered within minutes.
For the entire week we stayed in this suite, the cleaning people continued to “barge” in, towels had to be requested daily, and the entire staff became extremely rude by the end of our stay. We weren’t requesting to be catered to, we just wanted a knock on the door and enough towels for the amount of people in the suite to shower daily. We did not think this was too much to ask, but evidently it was. Also, the hotel was not busy by any means. It was February, not a busy season, so there was no reason for the staff to seem inconvenienced by our requests. The only reason we continued to stay was because we did have a gorgeous ocean view and prime location on the beach. We weren’t in our suite except to eat, sleep and bath.
Other problems included running out of hot water after a 5 minute shower, the stove only worked "occasionally" and we had to listen to our neighbors fight all day and night. The police showed up 3 times throughout the week for domestic violence calls because of the neighbors, and Howard Johnson continued to let the guests stay.
Because of this experience, we will never stay in the Howard Johnson in Fort Meyers Beach again, and will be VERY hesitant to stay in any other locations as well. (Even if it was free!)
