Thanks! I guess Jack would decide that his starlet-lust fantasies would no longer need to involve birth control. But i'm not him, so i could be completely off.

Maybe it's the teacher in you subconsciously showing up and whapping my hands with a ruler,
Dude, if i ever apply to teach at a Catholic school, you _have_ to be one of my references. K?
but I still find myself taking notes every time you write a review... I'm a Beck fan. So obviously I'm missing something by not being a Solex fan.
Sounds good! My favorite Solex record is Pick Up. But i'd better admit that my mental image of Beck is years out of date. You're a fan of Odelay, Mellow Gold, and "the Little Drum Machine Boy", right? That's who needs to know Solex. To anyone who came on board with Mutations and Sea Change, i apologize for sloppy writing.
And hey, Timony's a Northeasterner. Buffalo's in the Northeast. Why shouldn't she come and visit? I should ask her that myself.
cheers,
- Brian

why I love young people. I never heard, or experienced, much of what you are writing about here
Aw, thanks, Virginia! Now that i'm doing all this after-school reading and math teaching, i'm not used to being "young people". Maybe you aren't either, but you should have Jude check the downtown rock club fliers and find you a show to attend.
Are you going at all deaf, by chance? If not, your ears will be among the youngest in the audience; whereas if you are, there's never been a better chance to fit in. A win either way!

They may be breeding for longevity and sexiness like something out of a Heinlein novel?
That's my theory. Back when Warren Beatty's hot tub was in full working order, they were breeding pretty goshdarn fast and frequent, too.
I'm not familiar with this artist, but she's welcome to have my offspring, regardless. I hope the SO doesn't see this.
Really? She obviously likes your genes, so i expect she'll think it's kind of you to want to share with musicians in need. Although i can't imagine why Ms. Timony would _be_ in that particular need.

I have absolutely no clue who this woman is.
Heya, Sue! Would it make everyone feel better if i wrote about how fond i am of R.E.M. and U2 and Alanis? Cuz i am, y'know. Whereas it's perfectly reasonable that you didn't know Mary Timony before: that's why she needs the love.
I love those small venues, I've always thought that this is how live music is meant to be experienced.
Yes. Especially for the fascination we share of watching the musicians at work: you can see them better. And they can see us better, too. I hope they don't mind.

I completely understand the need to kind of process'n'purge over your experiences at a concert. I did it, and you read it,
Oh yes! Reviewing a folk concert as if you were a J.D. Salinger character. That was pretty brilliant, actually; all _I_ did was review a concert as if i was me. Glad you enjoyed regardless.

But Solex, a weird Dutch record-shop owner who deserves to have the same fans Beck does...
Maybe it's the teacher in you subconsciously showing up and whapping my hands with a ruler, but I still find myself taking notes every time you write a review. I mean, even if I have no interest in what you're talking about (which doesn't happen very often and isn't the case with this review), you manage to work in these little side-mentions of other bands/artists that I do care about. See, because, I'm a Beck fan. So obviously I'm missing something by not being a Solex fan.
In any case, Ms. Timony sounds interesting as well, and I'll be watching the local papers for a not-all-that-likely-but-I-can-hope-anyway Buffalo arrival.
Kudos and other granola-based snacks to you,
Mike

a great review - making me understand again why I love young people. I never heard, or experienced, much of what you are writing about here, but I read every word and pictured this girl at her guitar, and you and your friend in front of the stage savoring each note and gesture.

"{ but can only create offspring with their fellow mutants }"
I think another piece of the big picture puzzle just snapped into place when I read that. They may be breeding for longevity and sexiness like something out of a Heinlein novel?
I'm not familiar with this artist, but she's welcome to have my offspring, regardless. I hope the SO doesn't see this.

I have absolutely no clue who this woman is. But I love concert reviews, and this is a great one. There is something singularly fascinating about watching talented people play - and it's always much more fun when they actually enjoy doing it. Sounds like a fun night - and I love those small venues, I've always thought that this is how live music is meant to be experienced.
Great write up, Brian -

... and the review of it here. I completely understand the need to kind of process'n'purge over your experiences at a concert. I did it, and you read it, if I recall, so I love the fact that someone else did it too, and in such a literate manner.
Again with the comparisons, vpt. Black Sabbath, They Might Be Giants, etc., etc. Quite a wide range of tastes, I see.
Cheers!

If you're lucky enough to be a talented musician, live it up!
As a horrible musician who still sings and air-drums, i say: Right on, Mel!
did you know that you are keeping me broke? You write these great, compelling reviews of artists I've never heard of, and I have to go and find something or theirs to listen to before the week is out.
Aww. *blushing* That's one of the coolest forms of praise my writing has ever gotten. Of course, facial expressions don't work well over the net, and maybe you accused me of this while scowling, holding a picket sign in your left hand, and lighting torches with your right. In which case i'm still delighted you said hi, but i should point out that my last name isn't really "Block", i'm not really white, and that all the stuff about me living in the Boston/Quincy area is a clever ruse.

Thanks, Andy! If nothing else, concert reviews would be a great excuse to spend more money seeing concerts...
i like black sabbath's first album, and indeed the band in general, so maybe i would appreciate this.
Sure. You'd find her cd's a bit flowery by Sabbath standards - but she's toured England/Scotland some times before, so i'll try to drop you a note if she comes your way.
i can understand and relate to crushes in physics clasees. i had a crush on a girl in my physics class - she didn't have her own band, so that's kinda irrelevant
Obviously, you gotta tell her that she needs a band. Physics class was a great time to concentrate on girls: it spared so much of the pain of concentrating on the physics teacher. Who unfortunately was young, male, and handsome, so i don't think any of us boys were scoring points that period.

I'd probably rank this at #3 on my list of my Top 101 favorite Epinions of yours... Simply beautifully done.
"Wow" back at you, and thanks. I wasn't sure, posting this, that anyone would like it: it's kinda short on useful information, and my point's a fairly odd one. I always enjoy nice comments, of course, but the comments here have been especially welcome.
I'm seeing an Emm Gryner/Jann Arden combo show pretty soon, for one.
If Emm's as fetching that night as she was when i saw her in Boston, you should have some quality writeup material. Go for it!
Magic City is one I've always vaguely meant to pick up, but perhaps I should really start by getting even more acquainted with my copy of The Golden Dove first.
Sounds like a plan.
will you see her now like i saw her then,

I discovered Helium through Beavis and Butthead. Their only real commentary on the video was "uhhh, that chick's hot".
I think i remember that! I only watched Beavis during the commercials of _real_ shows, but they were fun, and i certainly didn't argue with their take on "that chick". I'm glad you like her singing, and you, Nikita, would surely be the last person to criticize an artist for being "out there". Thanks for dropping by!

I love when musicians actually seem to like what they do. That whole tortured artist who only makes music because it's pratically leaking out of their mental pores(making it hard to hold down a customer service job) thing--that really doesn't wash with me. If you're lucky enough to be a talented musician, live it up!
Anyway, did you know that you are keeping me broke? You write these great, compelling reviews of artists I've never heard of, and I have to go and find something or theirs to listen to before the week is out. Mary Timony, here I come...
Great review!

im glad you felt like doing this...you should write concert reviews a LOT more often.
it appears that i like black sabbath's first album, and indeed the band in general, so maybe i would appreciate this. i'm not sure, but your tastes always intrigue me.
and finally...i can understand and relate to crushes in physics clasees. i had a crush on a girl in my physics class at one point (back in the day), but so did a lot of the other boys in the class, if you get my drift. anyway, she didn't have her own band, so that's kinda irrelevant. i'm rambling.

Sad but true fact...I discovered Helium through Beavis and Butthead. Their only real commentary on the video was "uhhh, that chick's hot". But I thought that they sounded interesting enough to buy the Pirate Prude EP. I've loved her voice ever since, even if her music has gotten a bit odd thematically.
Nice job; I actually like writing concert reviews, even if they are faintly pointless. :)
