| cmaw63's Full Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End |
Make sure you watch this movie while you're sober. When they wrote and produced Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End it appears they were blasted out of their minds. On the other hand, maybe it would be more enjoyable with a few drinks under your belt.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Director, Gore Verbinski, creates a 2 hour & 48 minute visual masterpiece with wonderful special effects and weird hallucinations. One is great to watch, the other disturbing.
A pirate ship sailing over the end of the world, Calypso's maelstrom, and ferocious large scale battles are visual treats for the eyes. In fact, they are the only things that kept me in the theater for the duration of this movie. The special effects were some of the best yet in the POTC trilogy and the reason my rating wasn't a one star. Yes, I felt the rest of the show was that bad.
Normally, I would say more Jack Sparrow is a good thing. Normally. Too bad there was nothing normal about more Jack Sparrow. Captain Sparrow's mind is allowed to twist and turn as much as this overly long movie does. I like Jack...when there is one of him. When several are splashed on the screen at the same time, interacting with each other, I had to work at following along with which one was the "real" Jack. Many of the multi-Jack scenes were weird, all should have been dealt with differently.
Everyone has their own agenda and it appears none of them want the same thing. Will wants to save his father, Bootstrap Bill. Jack Sparrow wants to be the next Davey Jones. Captain Barbossa wants to free Calypso and stop Davey Jones from destroying the last of the pirates. Elizabeth wants to...well, I'm not quite sure. It appears she wants to have it all...be with Will, save Jack Sparrow, be a captain...everything.
While Elizabeth seems to want everything, this movie seems to want to revolve around her. From minute one to minute 168, Elizabeth fills the screen. Another minus for me. Elizabeth Swann is a major player, but shouldn't be the player. I equate Pirates of the Caribbean with Captain Jack Sparrow and was disappointed that they have relegated him to a lesser character than he originally was.
The much awaited appearance of Keith Richards as Jack Sparrow's father was disappointing. The few minutes he was a part of this film were some of the most boring. The only good thing I can say is it's the first time I've ever been able to understand what he was saying.
While Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End seems to have it all...betrayals, love, death, friends, and enemies...much of it did not come together in a smooth, cohesive way. The betrayals kept me busy trying to figure out who was on which side. It became a tedious task rather quickly.
After leaving the theater my friend and I spent the drive home trying to help each other figure out what we had just watched. The only thing we could agree on is if there is a fourth POTC we will not go see it. Wait...isn't this a trilogy? Yes, it was supposed to be. But, the ending of POTC: At World's End was left wide open for a fourth. Nothing is settled to my satisfaction, which is the entire reason I spent the money to see this movie. I wanted closure!
I had to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End to finish the trilogy out. If you haven't seen the first two...don't. The only way I can recommend this movie is if you have seen the first two and you're willing to wait for this one to come out on DVD. Save your money, save your time....hell, save yourself, watch something else. Savvy?
