Mommy, Momma, Mom, Mother, Granny!

May 03 '04

The Bottom Line Happy Mother's Day to my Mommy, my Mother, my Friend! (my contribution to the Mother's Day Write Off)

At some point in my life, I have referred to my Momma as Mommy, Momma, Mom, Mother, and now Granny. I'm sure, during my teenage years I referred to her by other names, but since this is a Mother's Day tribute, I believe we'll leave that part out!

Before my husband and children, my Momma was the only true constant in my life. She was and still is, my BEST FRIEND! I love my Momma and I've never been afraid to let it show.

Momma and Daddy were married when she was 18 years old and I was born the following year. Three years later, another baby girl came along, and then another four years later, my baby sister was born completing our family. Momma stayed at home with her three girls and did her part to provide a good home life for us. She was room Mom, cheerleading Mom, Brownie Troop Mom, taxi cab Mom, etc.

My parents divorced when I was 14 years old. Suddenly, my Mother was forced to return to work and to support three daughters on her own. Finding a job when you haven't worked in over 10 years was not an easy task. She wasn't TOTALLY on her own. My Daddy always paid child support and did his part financially as any decent father would. However, it was up to my Mom to provide a roof over our heads and the stability and emotionally support that we needed. As if the divorce wasn't tough enough, her father passed away less than a month after the divorce was final. Throughout this trying time, she struggled to keep us as happy as she could and to never fail us. She took a weekend job in a fast food restaurant at the age of 34 just so I could wear the "right jeans" to school.

I could always go to my Mom with anything - and I mean anything. We have always had an open, honest and trusting relationship that still holds true today.

My younger sister pulled some really crazy - and just downright stupid stunts when she was a teenager. I thought this would send my Mother over the edge, but she struggled to stand up for and to protect my sister even when she did wrong.

Our lives were not perfect. My Momma had some tough times, and there were times during my teenage years where I became more of a parent to her and an extra Mom to my two sisters. Still, we managed to work through it all and developed a closer bond than I have ever had with any other friend.

I used to call my Momma on my birthday - at 7:23 in the morning - just to say "Thanks" for what she was going through at that moment in 1968.

When I turned 30, my Mom wrote me a 3 page letter reflecting on my life from the moment they placed me in her arms until the day I turned 30. I still cannot read the letter without crying - but it is tucked safely inside my hope chest to remind me that "My Mommy loves me".

Now, I am 36 years old, and my Mommy is Granny to four beautiful grandchildren - my middle sister has two children, and I have two children. Mom is also the day care provider for my children. Everyday my children receive the same, if not more, love and devotion to their well being as I received from my Momma as a child!!

Happy Mother's Day Mommy!! I love you!!
