Don't Get A Pet If You Aren't Willing Or Able To Properly Care For It!

May 04 '04

The Bottom Line Our latest family member came from an abused and neglected background. He has a great personality, and finally a new home.

I am currently in the process of adopting a new family member. His name is Hemi, and he is a rottweiler. He is about 1 1/2 years old. My daughter took temporary custody of Hemi after his removal from his previous home. The discovery of how underfed and neglected he was with his former owners is sickening, but she is unable to keep a second dog where they are currently living. She will be bringing Hemi do stay with me tonight.

In my care I know that Hemi will be fed every day, not once or twice per week. He will get fresh water, and lots of attention. It makes me sick to think of what this poor creature had to endure before someone finally stepped in.

Hemi also has never been to a vet, nor had any of his shots. He has not yet been fixed, although that day will be coming soon. He is so thin that you can see every bone in his body sticking out. It is so sad that any animal should have to endure this kind of treatment.

Hemi is a beautiful dog, or at least he will be once he gains a bit of weight. He has a wonderful personality and is terrific with the kids, and other animals. I understand though that rottweilers can get mean, especially if handled roughly. For this reason my children have all been told that there is to be absolutely no roughhousing with Hemi.

Although he has a very sweet personality, I have also advised my children to use caution until Hemi gets used to us. Being starved, he may be overly anxious when presented with food, and I wouldn't want to take any chances with a small hand getting in the way of his dinner. Even though I don't expect any problems, I don't want to take any chances where my human children are concerned.

I hope this is an isolated case of animal cruelty and neglect. Hopefully all pet owners will make certain that their pet is fed and given fresh water on a regular basis, but it is also important whenever you get a new pet that everyone in the household knows any special rules and boundaries for the pet.

Although proper feeding is important, there is more to caring for a dog than just throwing him food once in a while. They not only need food and water but also need affection, just like you and I do. They need proper medical attention as well.

All animals require some sort of attention. They may be able to survive out on a rope in the backyard, but what kind of a life is that for them. I'm not saying you should never put your dog out on a chain, but don't forget he is out there. My point here is please don't get a dog or any other pet if you aren't willing to put the time and effort to take proper care of it.
