Dedicated to Daniel

Jun 22 '04

The Bottom Line an attempt to express the feelings of loss that occur when a young friend suddenly dies.

I was inspired to write a poem about my son's recent loss of a friend. I have written about this loss previously. In A Life Ended, Another Changed. The following are two poems that I wrote in honor of my son's friend Daniel, may he forever brighten the Kingdom of Heaven the way that he brightened our lives.

Goodbye Daniel
Debra Pace

A life cut short much too soon
On a summer night
In the middle of June

A single moment frozen in time
Will forever weight hauntingly
On my mind

A boy so young and full of life
Was taken from his friends
That sorrowful night

Precious potential never met
Full of humor
I can not forget

Brave and bold, full of ambition
Now recruited
For a bigger Mission

A star burnt out in this place
No longer can I
See his face

Somewhere else he lights the way
Awaits our meeting
Again someday

To Daniel
Debra Pace

How is it that the world still turns
How can the wind blow and the ocean churn
Is it possible that the sun could still rise and set
As if Mother Nature can forget

It seems impossible that life could go on
When everything in life is suddenly wrong
All around me things remain unchanged
But I will never be the same

Painful sadness shifts to numbness, guilt and blame
Deep in my soul I cry out in vain
No amount of tears can drowned my sorrow
The agonizing grief will continue tomorrow

It is hard to breath, my chest feels tight
How can any of this be right

My mind grasps at emptiness unable to find understanding
I search my heart for some sort of meaning
Memories come floating back like a gentle breeze
And thoughts of a future absent of these

How is it that the world still turns
How can the wind blow and the ocean churn
Is it possible that the sun could still rise and set
As if Mother Nature can forget

It seems impossible that life could go on
When everything in life is suddenly wrong
All around me things remain unchanged
But I will never be the same
