Re: Try Self Help (Reply to this comment)

No, sweets, I avoid the self-help books like the plague. And I also get a couple of cents for typing opinions on the stuff that I DO read from the store, whether I liked them or not. And after reading this book and a few others, I realized that it doesn't take a whole lot to get published these days.
No enlightenment, no real stories that stuck, no characters that made a damned bit of sense to me...I'm an atheist, so my opinions on the women who all hoed around (epinions won't let me type the "w" word) in this book isn't coming from a christian perspective - just a moral one. It was a story about a bunch of weak women who seemed to think that being hoes and weak is alright...they get a sense of power for an hour or two while they get some guys into bed (no difficult task).
If you want a recent good book of short stories, try "Secrets of the Fire King." There are characters both likable and not in there, the images and stories stick with you and it's worth a read...while I stand by the fact that I think Pia's book is a waste of time...I'm sorry, I know it took her time and effort and all that jazz, but there wasn't anything really GREAT or stand-out in there.
I also dislike Nora Roberts books...anyone care to argue with me about her tripe - women whose lives center only around love and sex? How boring is that and what fricking century are we in?

Try Self Help (Reply to this comment)
by TerryBain
It sounds as if you really want to be reading books from the self-help section of the bookstore. What on earth are you expecting from a short story? The happy women from nola who are absolutely never going to cry ever because they are so giddy why would they and even if they were a little sad here is exactly why so don't worry, life will be rosier in just a moment?
I read this book and it was frankly one of the most moving collections I've read in a really long time.
Um, and, well, you didn't like anyone in the book or anything they did? Since when is that a qualification for good literature? Good gravy. I guess I can scratch Catcher in the Rye off my list of great literature.
Blessings.
