Over a year ago, I wrote an epinion called My Epinions Family. In this article, I named 29th_Candidate as my handsome husband, iculookn as my bubbly sister, almighty as my aloof brother, among several other users. The biggest chuckle (or guffaw, eh Jim?)I received was for calling Hard_To_Please my grandmother.
Now, before I go any further, let me do my Epinions duty and give you my take on Ebay so that you can make an educated and informed decision.
My impression of Ebay was basically the internet savvy person's garage sale. I heard about people selling their dirty panties last year, and I just couldn't believe it. I thought Ebay was just plain tacky. I thought it was used by pack rats and people desperate for money.
Then, I suddenly became desperate for money. I hurt my shoulder pretty badly on June 26 of this year, and have been on a pittance of Worker's Compensation ever since. Unfortunately, my husband jtbmopar (Surprise to those of you that didn't know that I eloped on Easter!) can't legally work just yet, and he's quite busy taking care of me to have a job even if he could.
I explained my situation to an email buddy of mine, and she suggested that I sell memoribilia from the various sets that I've worked on. Believe it or not, I actually had several scripts that I could sell! So, I boogied my way over to Ebay, completed their easy sign up and began auctioning off my items.
To tell you the truth, I didn't expect it to be so easy. After my first week, I made about $130 with just 3 scripts. I decided to donate a portion to Hard_To_Please with whatever payments I received by PayPal. Unfortunately, I only received one payment by PayPal and gave him 20%. Not very much, but it's certainly a start.
The variety of items available is absolutely amazing. I've sold 3 different scripts and a shirt. Right now I've got auctions going for silk boxers and moisturizer. Madonna's childhood home is even being auctioned!
The forms are quite simple to fill out. There are many different ways to make payments and receive your money. While I haven't made all that much on Ebay, I'm still a newbie. The community is quite strong there, and they've been helping me out.
Well, everyone knows what happened on Tuesday, September 11. I watched in horror along with the rest of the nation as the Twin Towers came crumbling down. My best friend, Dionne25, couldn't get in touch with her mother until 11:00pm EST. I don't even want to go into how many friends I have that are personally involved with this tragedy.
Not to sound like I'm just wiping my hands of this new war, but I got upset everytime I turned on the television. Images of my home turning to rubble was right in front of my face, and there wasn't anything that I could do about it. No matter what channed I turned on, it was news coverage about wither NY, where I grew up, or DC, where I went to school. Even the Home Shopping Network was covered with news. I had to do something to get my mind off it.
So, my husband and I went to Wal*Mart. I was walking through the crafts section when I came upon some yarn, and then I started thinking about my dear old GrandMark, Hard_To_Please.
You see, when I put up that post I initially talked about, GrandMark told me that he was going to knit me a sweater for Christmas. Well, it's way past Christmas, and I haven't seen hide nor hair of the sweater.
Unfortunately, because of my shoulder, I can't knit. But I found the coolest thing, called the lap loom where I can make afghans. I thought to my self, "Self, you can make afghans and sell them on Ebay! People would certainly buy them." So, I bought the lap loom, some yarn and was on my merry way.
As I was weaving my afghan, I began thinking some more. Like I said, I'm not currently in the greatest financial situation. I'm wounded, and I'm an actress. since I don't have any extra money, I can't make donations to anything. However, I figure that I can sell these afghans, and donate the profits to both GrandMark and associations dealing with the WTC and Pentagon.
So, I'm making a red, white and blue afghan. All of my "patriotic" afghans will go to the rescue effort. All of the other afghans I create with go towards Serious Business. Thanks to Ebay, there's something that I can do about both crises that I care so much about.
GrandMark has been there for me in so many different situations since I became a member. We've had out petty disagreements, but always seem to agree to disagree. Even when I was stranded in St. Louis, I was given Mark's phone number in case I needed help. (He, unfortunately, wasn't home when my plane was cancelled...) Anyway, this is the best that I can do to help.
So, there you have it. Ebay being used as a tool to help those in need.
By the way...For any of those people interested, my user name on Ebay is HollywoodChick.
