| Vilanova11's Full Review: Gran Turismo 2 for PlayStation 1 |
When I went to the store in search of a racing game that used real cars, there was no other choice in my mind besides Gran Turismo 2. Besides the fact that it was recommended highly by many people both on the internet and by friends, it was a sequal, so I figured that the graphics would be better, along with the gameplay. And as I would soon find out, I was 100% right.
Like the title says, Gran Turismo 2 is the ultimate driving simulator, which blows all other racing games out of the compitition. Two discs, one for arcade mode(1 or 2 players) and Simulation Mode on the other disc(for the true racing experience).
Now I'll take you through each disc, including the features, pros & cons, and much much more. The Simulation Disc starts you off as an unexperienced driver with a lot of money($10,000) and an ambition to start racing cars. Before you start to race, you must work your way up through a number of licenses(which give you access to more cars, parts, and races). Starting with B License(followed by A, I-C, I-B, I-A, and Super License) you learn to master the simple technics of racing the different types of cars and how to handle them. After you've acquired a license or two, you can buy your first car. With the purchase of a car, you can buy parts(such as muflers, turbo kits, engine parts, brakes, tires, and much more), buy different types and color wheels, and even get your car "racing modified"(ussually $80,000). With at least 50 different courses with different regulations, by HP, you will be entertained for hours. You can enter either a Gran Turismo league, endurance tracks(a minimum of 30 laps, long time!), rally courses(dirt races that require dirt tires), and special events that race different types of cars. Every time you win a special race, you will win a new car. This feature will keep you entertained by enlarging your garage and giving you more cars. To get back to the cars, they have every brand from Aston Martin to Volkswagon which range from 50 Horse power to 1000+ horse power.
Now on to the second disc, the arcade mode. In this disc you can race either by yourself to practice or play with another to prove who is better. Along with the cars that are included in this mode, you can load both yours and your friends cars with the custumizations onto the race track to race against each other. The more you win in simulation, the more bonus' you will get in the arcade mode.
To analyze this game, it is by far the best racing game I have ever played, let alone, probably the best ever made. Gran Turismo brings every little detail of racing into your playstation. Engine sounds vary by car and by its power. The details on each car about as real as it can get. Real courses bringing you to many countries including USA, Germany, Italy, Japan, and more. Courses go through the woods, streets, dirt tracks, beaches, with night and day races.
There really isn't much to say bad about this game, probably the biggest problem was the learning curve. It takes at least a couple of hours to get used the realism of this game. Even to this point, I am still learning how to drive better and strugling with new levels(I have had this game for at least 3 weeks). Another problem with this game, or at least my copy, there is only about three or four out of the ten songs played. Most of these songs are pop songs from Beck, Garbage, Rob Zombie, Filter, and other artists. Besides those small problems, everything else is out of this world with excellence.
