Pros: Fae fun (in twisted ways)
Cons: The frustration of no one telling Mac anything
The Bottom Line: I believe it was Jericho Barrons who said "Life is messy." Indeed.

| ssjakira1's Full Review: Karen Marie Moning - Bloodfever |
Truth is, I was actually halfway done with this book when I began Darkfever (I didnt think Id be able to get it so I said, Forget it and just started reading). In which case, you could start reading this book without the first one because Karen Moning does a pretty good recap job. The only catch is that when she uses terms previously explained in the first book, youll think, Eh? You can always go back to the Glossary in the back, but you will have to make sure you read the entries you want without allowing your eyes to wander, else you risk spoiling a few things.
But if youve read the first book, welcome back to the continuation of Macs little ripped up world where Fae kill for fun, her protector (more or less) Jericho Barrons is still enigmatic and semi-dangerous, and she struggles to find answers to this new reality, as well as kill her sisters murderer. The Unseelie are increasing in numbers, deaths and disappearances are rising, and both Mac and Barrons have yet to find the Sinsar Dubh, an evil book of the blackest magic. But they still have their hands full, as Barrons does whatever it is he does, and Mac learns about other sidhe-seers, what that Grim Reaper figure truly is, and just how far she is willing to go to stay alive.
This book was a lot more fun. This is mostly due to the fact that Mac has grown up a lot more. She still argues a lot with Barrons (in a sort of Stephanie Plum kind of way, and at times it can be annoying because you know Barrons isnt going to give anything away), but at least shes doing better than she was and making better, bolder judgment calls. There are some times when I still wish she would just wig out on someone more than she already does, but then my problem is that I keep putting myself in the situation and think of what I would do, and Im not the character, so fat lot of good that does me. Still, near the end when she finds out what Barrons did that helped to save her life and she still freaked out on him? No. Just, no. You dont complain about that sort of thing. If anything, you just shut up and let it go. Yeesh.
On a lighter note, as Ive said, it was nice to see Mac getting a little more aware of the world around her and getting a lot feistier with it. I did like that a few times she dressed up to go out in bright colors and whatnot just to keep some of the old Mac and bring something pretty back to the junky world around her. I can respect that. It didnt say she was in a skirt or anything, that would have negated my approval (I mean, if monsters might pop up to kill you, its going to suck fighting them off in a skirt and heels; dont pay attention to what comic book creators tell you).
Again, this is far from romance, but whatever. Vlane shows up again in his Seelie prince glory, which made for a pretty sweet little look into the world of Faery, but theres nothing remotely romantic about him. Overall its pretty dark as well, especially near the end. Hey, a few parts had me panicking, and the book that gets you to react with it does a good job. While the first book had me thinking mild, Whoa thats creepy or being kind of irritated here and there, this time I was letting out little squeals in my brain, wondering just how Mac was going to get herself out of some specific predicament. The last book has plenty to go through; from Barronss origins to the death of the Lord Master and figuring out what to do about the Sinsar Dubh. And will the last book actually be able to truly make it into the romance genre?? (haha)
Nicoles Personal Predictions: Jericho Barrons is actually the Unseelie King borrowing/using that particular body; Barrons is actually the fabled Fae by the name of Cruce borrowing/using that particular body; or he is just one fecked up human. But as this book just came out this month, Ill be waiting a while until the next book, Faefever comes out.
