Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
By now, anyone who knows me knows that The Waltons is one of my all time favorite television shows. I was their biggest fan when I was a child and I have continued to love this show and watch it with my children. When Warner Home Video began producing this show on DVD season by season we began looking forward to each season as it came out in a package. (We are looking forward to Season 6 which is being released on Jan 8, 2008)
Season five we were able to pick up this past fall. We found it at Barnes and Nobles. It was released earlier in 2007 but we had trouble finding it. We purchased season 5 for 39.95. In it, there are 5 discs with 24 episodes of the Waltons that aired in 1976-1977.
On Disc 1, you will follow the Waltons as John Boy opens the Blue Ridge Chronicle and Mary Ellen makes her first medical diagnosis that is incorrect. John Boy attempts to education the folks that live on the Mountain about Germany, and a young boy who cannot speak moves onto the mountain.
On Disc 2, Mary Ellen is the first of the Walton children to marry, and what a wedding it is. John Boy sells John Boy's meadow and nearly breaks Grandpa's heart. JimBob becomes a mechanic and Aunt Martha Corrine comes back to visit the family. A heart warming Chrismtas episode is also part of Disc 2. This is the first Christmas episode since the Homecoming movie about the Waltons.
On Disc 3 Grandpa fights to free a wild captive mustang, Grandma becomes upset with having to share her organ playing in church and Elizabeth is having nightmares about a ferris wheel. Erin nearly marries, and John takes a job in a miserable office again. Then Erin graduates from high school!
Disc 4 has four episodes. John Boy goes to see the Hindenburg and Jason falls in love with a married woman. Grandma goes to the hospital and Grandpa is missing her terribly.
Disc 5 has three episodes, and here we have more information about Germany and the approaching WW2. Ben becomes a used car salesman and In the final episode of Disc 5, Richard Thomas leaves the show to publish a book in New York City.
The Walton DVD set season five is great and nostalgic and I simply love the set. There are a few things I dislike though. One is that the DVDs continue to not have numbers on them so we are never sure which one we are watching and they always get put back into the wrong cases. The second issue is that there are episodes on each side of the DVDs, so they have to be turned over. I think it might be better and the DVDs might be better preserved if they were numbered and had more one sided DVDs. Simply because we need to handle them a lot to see the video we are interested in!
If you are looking for wholesome entertainment then the Walton's will be exactly what you are looking for. This season represents 1937, and the family is beginning to really see WW2 in their future. This is a historical show that will give your family loads to talk about as you watch it. It is heart warming and this family is a wonderful glimpse at where America's families used to be. We could learn a lot from these folks.
