Scary movies have always been targeted to teen and young adult audience. That is, they are often stupid and purile. Cheep scares and lavish SFX all too often take the place of a good story and good editing.
This is not the case for The Others. This is a scary movie for grown ups. That doesn't mean that there are adult themes or gory acts of violence. It means that if you long ago gave up your teenage mentality, you will enjoy this film.
A young mother, whose husband never returned from WWII, has secluded herself and her children in a mansion on the Isle of Jersey. The mother, played expertly by Nicole Kidman, must take care of her children who suffer from a rare disease that left them allergic to sunlight. Exposure to its rays could be deadly.
After the sudden departure of her househould staff, the mother must find new help. A trio of help, who had worked at the mansion for previous owners, arrives to help out. Strange occurances coincide with their arrival.
Dark secrets and hints of insanity help to move the film along to a very good and very surprising ending.
Around halfway through The Others very definitely loses its way, but it gets right back on track after a very frightening scene that revolves around a communion dress.
Although set right after WWI, The Others is a very straight forward Victorian thriller filled with good frights and big twist ending.
