hey there yo...
The Lincoln Highway cuts right through the middle of Iowa. I have driven parts of it many times, but I never really put those experiences into the context of a coast-to-coast highway.
You are absolutely right about the Lincoln Highway being much more accessible to many more Americans than Route 66.
you sig'd off by saying...
"been drivin' all night, my hand's slick on the wheel"
to which I would respond...
"There's a voice in my head that drives my heel
It's my baby callin', says I need you here
And it's half past four and I'm shifting gear"
...if you were trying to quote Radar Love by Golden Earring...
( And it is: "my hand's wet on the wheel" to be a bit more 'correct'. )
Hey, thanks for the read/rate/comment. Nice to see you active on the site again...

Wow, Route 30! I have to admit, I love this road even more than Route 66. Yes, 66 has the pop culture mystique about it, but you also have to be willing to head west if you want to try it for yourself. Closest I've gotten to that was standing at the very end of the road in downtown Chicago, and a bit of back-and-forth south of the city.
But Route 30, I know much better. I live about three stoplights away from it now, and there's almost no escaping it to go anywhere east or west in town.
Route 30 even ran through my college town, and one year, returning from Spring Break, my girlfriend and I decided to skip the toll roads and just drive back on 30. It was a great trip, that took only about half an hour longer than the "real" roads would have, even when we found ourselves detouring around a county fair that seemed to be set up right on the road. There's nothing like huge, open stretches of straight road through the middle of farmland on a warm, sunny afternoon!

hey there Patsy...
Earlier this morning I was looking at mapquest, checking out 'the neighborhood' of a user who lives in the Los Angeles area.
It was amazing to see how 'built up' it is. Mile after mile after mile of nothing but buildings and cars and people, pushing up into the foothills of the mountains.
Makes mile after mile after mile of corn and beans and small towns seem not quite so bad . . .now if we could only do something about the snow and cold...
Thanks for the read/rate/comment..!!

We're doing highways these days (Reply to this comment)

You said, Lincoln Highway: Coast to Coast Along Route 30 from Times Square to the Golden Gate is but one slice, one ribbon, one guide to an America that still exists in our small towns, in our neighbors willing to help a traveler, in our wanderlust to discover who we are and to discover our place in this ever-changing land we call America
It seems that the large towns and those along the interstates have lost their sense of place and individuality. I love the backroads, the forgotten highways.
Nice review, naturally.
