I was compelled to write this review for the simple fact that I Hate Shopping!
Unlike some people (whom shall remain nameless **cough** women **cough**) when I go into a store it is because I need a particular item, I go in buy it and leave. Walking around and randomly looking at things I really have no intention of buying is not for me. My other mild phobia is when it comes to trying things on. I can’t go into the little changing rooms and try anything on. I always picture some other guy in his underwear (or heaven forbid he’s one of those guys who likes to forgo underwear just to let it roam free **shiver**) putting on the same clothes I am about to purchase, which is why I wash everything I buy ASAP. Funny but my girlfriend nor my mother seems to be in tune with my concerns. I think I just gave everyone who reads this my phobia, your welcome.
This is the reason I love online shopping. In the past few years I have bought, books, clothes, electronics, movies, kitchen equipment, ect. All from online stores saving me the trouble of waiting in lines or putting up with rude or ignorant sales people.
My newest love is buying my clothes online. JCPenny.com is by far my favorite. I have now made 5 purchases through this online paradise and it is my last order that compelled me to write this Epinion, but lets do the facts first.
The Setup
The online store is extremely well organized. Everything from outerwear to innerwear, casual to dress for women, men and children are organized by category. You can also search for your favorite designers and name brands. Sizes, and colors are all available to be selected once you pick what type of clothes you want. Pick your shirt type, size, and color then click “place order” it’s that simple.
I won’t go into to much detail since you can easily tell just by going to the site how organized it is. I know most people are interested in the service, delivery speed, and price. I have noticed that a couple of things that I bought from the store were not in the online store. Also their selection of casual shirts is not the best, but I could say the same for the store.
Account, Prices / Delivery
The prices are just a bit higher than they are in the store. Last time I went to the store to buy some pants I went online to compare them. I paid $2.00 less by buying them in the store (plus shipping charges). Hmm $2.00 to avoid traffic, waiting in line, and 200,000 teens with nothing better to do than hang out in the mall, well worth it!
When you setup your account you have to give them the typical things, name, address, credit card. There are a few interesting options though, one is you can have your items sent to your local store. This will save you a lot in shipping, but you still have to deal with the traffic, lines, and 200,000 teens. Another option is to setup up a Express Checkout you basically click on the items and then choose checkout and you are done. It charges it to your credit card and you go on with life. The only downside is you cannot get gift-wrapping or use gift certificates when you use this option. There is also an option for AOL Quick Checkout, which uses your E-Wallet to pay for items. I don’t have aol so I’m not sure how that works.
The shipping on my last couple of orders has been $8.00 to $10.00 UPS 3-7 day’s delivery. I have not had to wait more than 4 days to get any of my orders. This price is not too bad at all, UPS charges a minimum fee of $4.40 (+ or -) no matter the weight, after a certain weight the price goes up. My orders have consisted of pants and dress shirts so $10.00 isn’t that bad.
My Latest Experience
I just placed an order last week for some cargo shorts and some shirts. I am going to FL, next month and of course I waited til the last second when all the stores in my area stopped selling shorts because of winter.
I went to the site and placed my order, 2 pairs of shorts, selected my size and the color I went and placed my order. Shortly afterward I received an email thanking me for my order and that it would be sent out shortly. A few days past and I received another e-mail telling me that my order was delayed because the stuff I had ordered was on backorder and to call an 800 number to get more info and my options.
I called up the 800 number and after a few seconds I was informed that indeed one of the items I had ordered was on back order. They apologized and gave me a few options, I could wait til the order was filled and have it shipped out all at once and I would get free shipping, or ship part out now and the rest later and pay shipping only on the first delivery. Both offers seemed fair and I choose the second option since I didn’t need the items for over a month. She told me I should have them within 2 weeks and again apologized for the delay. I did express my concern telling her I was leaving is about 5 weeks for a vacation and she assured me I would have it by then.
Now first off I am amazed that I even received an email telling me my order was delayed. Most of the time I never know unless I look it up myself. What happened next is even more amazing, a little over a week later (last thurs) I received a call (yes an actual phone call) telling me that my order was completed and on it’s way. After recovering from my minor heart attack I thanked them and hung up.
Will it last?
JCPenny online has been around for over 2 years and I have only recently started using them. I am not sure if my experience is typical of JCPenny customer service, but I can tell you that it’s not typical of online stores in general. In fact this is the first time that an online store has actually used the phone number I gave them.
I would say that JCPenny is doing it to attract new customers and keep the ones they have, but they have been around for awhile so hopefully this is the way it will stay.
