Pros: Easy to use. Server side buddy list. Yahoo notifcations.
Cons: Poor Linux Port. User defined status msgs local not server based.
The Bottom Line: If you want an instant messenger, get this one. With all the options and features, MSN, ICQ, AIM are all outclassed and underskilled.

| angelmeice's Full Review: Yahoo! Messenger |
Yahoo is an all-in-one service. It offers Web page hosting through its acuired company, Geocities. It also offers Classified ads, Personal Ads, Auctions, News, Tons of games, a Briefcase to transfer files to trusted parties, a mapping feature (which I use a lot) and most importantly a tool that ties many of these functions together: Yahoo Messenger.
I've been using Yahoo messenger for three years now. It was the first Messenger I tried and stuck with. I've tried them all and have found that YIM is the better of the bunch. Not solely for its chat and instant message functions but also for its integration with Yahoo.com's services. Last year I make posts on the Classified's secion and also, which I'm reluctant to admit, to the Personals section. If I had not had YIM installed each time I wanted to check a certain section of Yahoo.com to see if I had any replies I would have had to login, goto either section, and open the mailbox. With YIM installed, each time I log into the messenger it checks my Yahoo Email, Yahoo Classifieds, Yahoo Personals & other services like my calender to see if a dates coming up. Also, for those of us that are news hounds, YIM offers a button with configurable news settings. Right now I have four sources of news coming to me, news which I'm concerned with not something on a web page that I don't care to see or that is forced onto me. Other buttons include one for your Stocks, Calender, Weather, and an Overview of your account. All these buttons are of course configurable. Those are just what is at simple one-touch access. These buttons are on the bottom of the messenger. At the Tools menu, at the option, Inside Yahoo there are even more things that Yahoo has integrated into YIM, such as Personalizing Yahoo, Shop Online, Visit Yahoo Groups, Play Games, and send Greeting cards.
Another thing I like about this service better than say ICQ, is unique user names, and profile pages.
The one down fall I've found with the messenger family is the port they have for Linux. Personaly I don't care for this at all. Its of an earlier verson, and hasn't been updated since I've installed and tested it earlier this year. The look, the feel, the options, its just something that I could do without. There is another downfall that I have with suggesting Yahoo, which is being dealt with at the moment but should be mentioned nonetheless. Yahoo has/had a horrible time with spammers. Searching the classified ads was hard because lots of posts were scams wanting you to visit web sites. Searching the personals was hard cause many linked to pornographic material. Like I said this is being worked on and has ceased in volume, but its still there and just something to take into consideration.
