Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
Francis (Diane Lane) divorce was unexpected, as most are, but life went on even if it wasnt as fulfilling as she could have hoped. When the opportunity to take a tour of Tuscany presents itself, she reluctantly takes it. Her journey becomes more than a vacation.
Multiple signs persuade Francis to purchase a villa and fix it up; a metaphor maybe for rebuilding her life. She finds friends, romance and fulfillment with her new life and extends her support and courage to those around her.
Personally, I thought Under the Tuscan Sun was a beautiful film; well-developed characters bring to life a story of hardship and hope to the beat of a marvelous soundtrack and gorgeous visuals.
Diane Lanes performance is outstanding; the subtle nuance she brings to her character lends credibility to the range of emotions she shows. Deep sorrow slaps the viewer in the face as her mottled complexion, water eyes and runny nose are unashamedly bared; uncontained joy is contagious as she jumps and chants her own praises after someone reminds her she is a woman. There are other moments brought to life worthy of mention but I recommend you watch and find them for yourself.
I would be remiss if I didnt add that others I spoke to of this movie did not agree with my evaluation; at least two of my co-workers found it to be mediocre and though they themselves are female declared it was too much of a chick flick. That being said, I believe anyone can enjoy this film if they refrain from trying to identify with t he characters and let the story unfold before them.
