This is one of the best comparisions comparing the 2 rivals and personally my favorite. It addressed everything and explained it well giving it in the Lil Kim and then the Foxy Brown views. It was very compelling.

Personally I like Lil Kim alot more. Not just in look but because her lyrics/music. Of course she shoots disses about Foxy not writing her stuff which is true, Foxy I believe deosnt. Plus Kim is widely publisized you can go anywhere and see her. There is news coverage of her, articles and interviews and all that. I did listen to Foxy Brown but I couldnt stand her. There is no beat or anything in Foxys music and Kim has all these clubs songs and such. I was thinking of buying Foxys new album just to see if she has changed but I would have to hunt it down somewhere. Bestbuy and all those place that sell cds dont sell it and so there is 1 place online I could order it. Lil Kim has stores promoting her new album Nakad Truth and you can go anywhere that sells cds and buy it.

overall Lil Kim I believe is much more successful and better at music and I prefer her alot more

Interesting comment...

I think the assumption that moving up the socio-economic ladder gives us more freedom is a large part of the reason there's a crisis of faith and soul in our country. Because too many people get up there and are unhappy. And not free. Lil Kim and Foxy are not free. They are bound by the systems of domination (racism, sexism, and partriarcy) that don't allow women to be completely self-actualized, particularly black women.

thanks for the comment.

Terrific essay. I would note, though, that white female artists also get a huge boost, critically as well as in the market, from singing about how much they like to have sex with various men. Critics tend to be men, so it's not a surprise.

I'm very much a fan of Liz Phair, and respectful of P.J. Harvey's work even if i'd rather not listen to it, but the fact that they and Courtney Love (who at least is trashy and shows much cleavage) are the last three white women to win the Village Voice Album of the Year poll -- while the critics have little but contempt for intro- and outrospective artists like Alanis or the Indigo Girls, and don't know that Dar Williams exists -- cannot, to my mind, be 100% about their artistry.

cheers,
- Brian

This is perhaps one of the best compare/contrast pieces on these two femcees I've ever read, and I've read quite a few. You covered all the core issues (race, mental stability, skill, mentors, etc) in amazing depth.

I too am Foxy Brown man (especially after Broken Silence) becuase I respect her skill and the struggle she went through to maintain her identity. I lost interest in Kim after Hardcore.

Thanks for the excellent entry!

Ask their agents, the banks and the credit card companies. In some ways, they are probably like all the rest of us.

Both are really talented.

I'm a huge fan of Foxy Brown. Her work speaks to something in me that is at the core of what i believe hip-hop is really about (damn the Five Pillars bull that was designed to make hip-hop more palatable for the mainstream). And I think she's phenomenally talented. Her messages are problematic, true, but in terms of sheer lyrical dexterity, she's disgustingly underrated. At some point, as a critic, especially in the format in which I wrote, has to remove subjectivity and look solely at issues of craft objectively. In doing so, I think it's nearly impossible to dispute Foxy's talent. Again, this is independent of personal taste.

That, being said Foxy should get a lot more credit for her growth and the broadening of her flow (regardless of personal taste). In an era of bland sameness, the courage with which she tries different sounds and flows and music should be encouraged. That they might fail is kinda secondary to the willingness to take chances. As a woman, as an artist in a time when ingenuity and risk-taking is frowned upon, it's crucial to be honest and be encouraging to artists of Foxy's caliber and stature who make creative choices that may or may not work.

thanks for comments y'all.

I ment their skills. As for Fox, I kinda like her personality, plus she has some highlights, while Lil Kim manages to get on my dick in every way possible. I mean the woman dissed Biggie's mother on a song...jeez...

Regarding Paul and Sin's comments. I find it interesting that neither of you care for these artists. The purpose of the piece wasn't to talk about their skills but the way in which they are perceived. I suspect that you both don't like them for many of the reasons discussed in my piece.

The question becomes, is any appearance of sexuality in women the reason for such disdain? Or is it the rejection of a very narrow depiction of sexuality? Are they the same?

thanks for the comment

Very nice writing, although I agree with paul about these two as rappers.

btw, You wanna tell madtheory you wrote this cause I think he missed it. (there's no link to it on his profile page, and it's been a day now)

Very interesting piece man. I could care less about either Foxy or Kim to be quite honest, but you still got my mind moving bout them... to be fair, both have been very clever in getting to the top. And I guess at least Fox is a half decent MC. Good stuff!
