JAGUARDOG’s entry in Puckmugger’s Second Annual Sport’s Challenge Write-off to celebrate his 300th Posting

Jul 08 '05

The Bottom Line Thanks Scott puckmugger for the Email invitation to your 2nd Annual Sports Challenge Write Off. Also I wish to congratulate you on your 300th Posting here at the Big “E”.

Here is the link to his explanation of the write-off and his questions to go by and then his entry link:

http://www.epinions.com/content_4427194500 His Questions

http://www.epinions.com/content_4427260036 His entry

Here are the rules in a nutshell for his 2nd Annual Sport’s Challenge Write-Off directly from the horses’ mouth:

“Here’s how it works. The first part is the question and answer write-off that we all love to join. The second part is to get out there and try something new. Once you’ve tried a new sport or outdoor activity, just post a review of a related product and I will link you up. Here’s the catch, if you already post in sports and outdoors, you need to post a review of something you don’t normally review. (For me hockey is out of the picture).”

First here is a list of his questions:

1. What are your favorite sports to watch on television?
2. How often do you watch sports on television?
3. What are your favorite sports to watch live?
4. How many live sporting events do you typically attend annually?
5. What organized team sports have you ever participated in previously?
6. What organized individual sports have you participated in previously?
7. What pick-up sports have you participated in previously?
8. What sports or outdoor activities do you currently participate in?
9. How often?
10. Is there any sport that you wish you could participate in now?
11. What’s keeping you from doing it?
12. If your fairy godmother was going to give you all the skill and a job in pro sports, what sport would you play?
13. What team and position (if relevant)?
14. What beer would you promote as a sports celebrity? (OK, that was just to make certain Bruguru, Marty and Fuche participate)
15. What brand would you promote?
16. Do you have any sports heroes? Who are they and why are they your heroes?
17. If you could invent a new sport, no matter how absurd, what would it be?

Now let me see if I can answer those bad boys honestly?

1. My Favorite sports to watch on TV in order with my favorite listed first are:

College Football
Pro Football
Olympics – Summer & Winter
Arena Football
Baseball - Yankees or Braves mostly but also the All-Star game and ALL the games in the playoffs no matter who is playing.

In the last 20 years or so my viewing habits have changed a lot when it comes to watching the Olympics. I watch 10 times the amount of coverage than say prior to 1980. I use to watch mostly Bobsled, Luge and Speed Skating only in the Winter Olympics but now I watch almost all the events except for Curling and Ice Dancing. I really enjoyed the newest event recently added during the last Olympics called Skeleton. Skeleton has now become my 3rd favorite event behind Bobsled and Luge.

Even though my viewing of the Summer Olympics has also increased greatly I only watch the following events that interest me.

Aquatics – ALL events (Diving, Swimming
Athletics – Almost all events (All running events, Decathlon, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault)
Badminton
Baseball
Beach Volleyball – (Women’s Beach Volleyball is my new favorite Summer Olympic Sport)
Canoeing
Cross-Country Mountain Biking
Cycling – Team Sprint & Team Pursuit
Gymnastics
Indoor Volleyball
Rowing
Shooting
Softball
Table Tennis

2. I watch a lot of Olympic coverage, Summer and Winter both as I mentioned in #1 above. I also enjoy the opening and closing ceremonies. College Football I always watch my favorite team if they are on first “Georgia Bulldogs”. If they are not on in my area I try to catch the “Miami Hurricanes”, “Florida State Seminoles”, “Hawaii Rainbows”, “BYU Cougars” or the best matchup of the day. Some Saturdays that is 3 or 4 straight games especially if ESPN or ESPN2 has a really late West Coast game. I also watch almost all the Bowl Games that I can watch that don’t overlap each other on 2 or more channels at the same time.

Pro Football I watch the “Jacksonville Jaguars” every week unless they are blacked out or it is their bi-week. I also try to catch as many “Miami Dolphin” and “Dallas Cowboys” games I can get. I used to be a very, very big Monday Night Football game watcher no mater who was playing. The last 5 years or so I only watch if it is one of the 3 teams I listed earlier. I might watch more games if they started at 8PM instead of 9PM because I need my beauty sleep and have to get up at 6AM the next morning to go to work. I also watch all the playoff games no matter who is playing. Even though I have never missed a Superbowl game I always look forward more to and enjoy the new commercials a lot more than the game itself.

I catch a few Area Football games here and there and try to watch teams from Florida or Georgia. My favorite team is the “Orlando Predators” but I also like “Georgia Force”, “Tampa Bay Storm” and “Dallas Desperadoes”. I also enjoy watching the “Colorado Crush” because of their owner “John Elway” and the “Philadelphia Soul” because of their owner “Jon Bon Jovi”. Whenever either team is playing they always have a few hundred camera shots of them during the game and they are very animated and fun to watch as they root on their team.

This year I caught for the very first time the new sport of Extreme Dodgeball on the Game Show Network. The league is comprised of 6 teams and each team is comprised of seven players of five men and two women. This season they have appointed “Rip Torn” as the League Commissioner and have added one celebrity team captain to each team. Each team plays a total of 10 games during the regular season. The winning team of the end of the season championship game splits $170,000.00. The 2005 season will begin on Tuesday night, 19 July Team captains who also play are the following:

Jeremiah Trotter (NFL Philadelphia Eagles Linebacker) for the Philadelphia Benjamins
Hal Sparks (From the TV show “Queer As Folks”) for the Chicago Hitmen
Tara Dakides (A Pro. Snowboarder) for the Denver Hurlers
Kerri Walsh (U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist in Beach Volleyball) for the Detroit Spoilers
Mario Lopez (From the TV show “The Other Half”) for the L.A. Armed Response
Mia St. John (Pro Boxer and current IFBA Light Heavyweight World champion) for the New York Bling

Lastly I also watch the Great Outdoor Games on ESPN. I began watching it last year and enjoyed almost all of the events and plan to watch it again this year. The 2005 or Great Outdoor Games VI begins on 7 July but the first televised even will be on ESPN next Wednesday night, 13 July from 9 to 11 PM EST and you can also see events on ESPN2 and on ABC. I enjoy all of the events but my favorites are the following in order:

Big Air (Dog jump from a dock to see how far they can get before hitting the water)
Log Rolling
Speed Climbing
Endurance
Hot Saw
Team Relay (It includes 4 members and each one has to complete a different event)

Five new events are being added this year and they are:

Four Wheel Frenzy (ATV’s trying to maneuver through an obstacle type course)
Hot Zone (Dogs chasing down Frisbee’s for speed and accuracy)
The Launch (Dogs jumping in the air for height and distance)
Super Jack (Eight Lumberjacks competing 9 different events)
Terracross (ATV’s racing)

3. My Favorite Sports to watch Live are Professional Football followed by College Football. The first 5 years of the Jaguars’ franchise I owned season tickets and in those 5 years missed only 3 games. One because of the Flu, one because I had walking phenomena and the other because of a terrible rainstorm. I’ve only been lucky enough to attend 3 College Football games live in my lifetime. I attended more than a dozen Atlanta Braves Baseball games when we lived in Atlanta in 1982. I was also lucky enough to get autographs from the following:

Steve Bedrosian - P
Bruce “Eggs” Benedict – C
Tommy Boggs - P
Brett Butler – CF
Rick Camp – P
Chris Chambliss – 1B
Gene Garber - P
Bob Horner – 3B
Glenn Hubbard – 2B
Rick Mahler - P (God rest his soul)
Dale “The Murph” Murphy – LF (Nicest player on the Team and my favorite)
Phil “Knucksie” Niekro – P
Pascual Perez – P (This guy was very hard to understand because of his accent but he was very funny)
Rafael Ramirez - SS
Claudell Washington – RF
Bob Watson – PH

I tried several times to get the autograph of Al Hrabosky but he was not ever accommodating to anyone about signing. The Mad Hungarian was just that, not a nice person to talk to or to be around, must have been that handle bar mustache that made him that way? (LOL) I also had season tickets to our local AA Baseball team here the “Jacksonville Suns” from 1985 to 1995. During that period I got a ton of autographs from team players, special visitors and special guests to the park and my favorites of all these are:

Bob “Rapid Robert” Feller (Hall Of Fame Pitcher in for autograph signing on a baseball cap and on a baseball)
Alex Rodriguez – (Played for the Suns in 1994 and had a limit of 3 signatures per person per game so I got him multiple games and still have about 25 or so of his autographs on all different Baseball cards.)
Ken Griffey – (Came by on a day off to watch his younger brother play)
Roger Salkeld (Pitched for the Suns 1991 & 1993 and was my favorite player and we got to be close friends)
Mac Suzuki (Pitched for the Suns in 1994 and I got to know him really well since I spoke a little Japanese)
Kent Bottenfield (Pitched for the Suns in 1989 & 1990 and another good friend)
Randy Johnson (Pitched for the Suns in 1987)
Bret Boone (Played for the Suns in 1991)

Scott Aldred (Played for the Suns in 1990)

I still have most of the signatures of the players above on Baseball cards in Mint condition that I hope to sell on E-Bay someday?

4. When I owned Jaguar Football season tickets I went to an average of all 10 home games each year which include the 2 pre-season games as well. Now that I no longer can afford them I am very lucky if I can afford to go once each year? Also when I owned Suns Baseball season tickets I went to almost all the home games each year, probably 90% of them. I have not been to a Suns game in about 10 years since the Jaguars became a franchise.

5. It’s been many, many, many years since I have been in any team sports. My last time was in 1983 when I was a member of the Company Slow-Pitch Softball team while I was stationed in Hawaii in the Army. Before that I was on a company softball team in Japan and won Most Valuable player for the play-off tournament that out team eventually won. I was also on a Japanese sponsored all-Military hardball Baseball team as well while in Japan in the Army. In High School I was on the Bowling team for 4 years and tried out for the golf team one year but after losing about 20 golfballs in a 9-hole day, I gave that up very quickly.

6. I’ve never been in a non-team sport but the closest would be on a Bowling League here in Jacksonville from 1985 to 1990. I guess that doesn’t count either because I was on a team of 5 bowlers in a mixed handicap league.

7. I don’t have the slightest idea what a pick-up sport is but since I have not done anything other than bowl in the last 20 years I would say none.

8. No sports or any outdoor activity of any kind in quite a few years. First off to old to be halfway decent at anything. Secondly to overweight to move very fast. Lastly I can’t be outside for too long of a period because of Asthma, Allergies and Bronchitis. Also heat in the 80’s or above after about an hour really bother me as I begin to perspire profusely.

9. See answer to #8 – None at all, but I would like to get out more often than my body allows me too do.

10. That is really a hard question due to my conditions and weight. If it was 25 to 30 years ago I’d love to play Professional Baseball, go back to Bowling regularly, swim once a week.

11. See answer to #8 again.

12. Professional baseball followed by being on the Men’s Professional Bowler’s tour.

13. First choice would be the New York Yankees, followed by the Atlanta Braves. Playing in the outfield, preferably in Right, second choice would be Left field. Both positions I had previously played for many years.

14. I no longer drink alcohol but did at one time way, way, way too much. I would promote Coors or Old Milwaukee.

15. I assume this is not the same question as #14 and you mean what brand of some other item other than Beer? If that is the case I would promote whatever paid the most as long as I believed in the product, it had nothing to do with testing on animals or humans and in no way could hurt animals or humans. I would go so far as to say I’d even do a “Joe Namath” if it paid really good because I’m not modest one bit.

16. Wow way too many to list them all but I can make a partial list.

JAGUARDOG’S FINAL THOUGHTS

Well that’s all I have and I know it’s a very, very long Q&A list but I decided to put all my effort into it. It may be the longest entry in the write-off and it took me almost 2 full days to put together but it was a lot of fun. Most of my regular friends and readers of my postings already know I am a big, big proponent of making a lot of different kinds of lists. I hope everyone has a Safe and Wonderful Weekend and God Bless, Ron.
