I've been under the weather lately. My husband and I had just stepped out of the hospital when he looked at me and asked if I was hungry. (This is guy-speak for "Feed me now! I'm starving!) I thought quickly and aswered with the name of the nearest fast-food restaurant. And so, we found ourselves pulling into the lot of the Long John Silvers and A&W Co-brand restaurants. (A co-brand is two restaurant franchises under the same roof.)
We got there right at 11:00 am and were the first customers in the store today. The night crew should be proud of themselves. The restaurant sparkled. Floor, tables and drink area were all clean and well stocked.
Ordering
At Long John Silvers you stand in line to approach the counter to order. Even though this is a co-branded location it follows the Long John Silvers format. This morning, there was not a line so Tiffany took our order as soon as we walked up. We ordered exclusively from the LJS menu. There is one soda fountain which is shared by both brands. The order was swiftly filled by another crewmember. If the order is not ready swiftly they will usually bring it to your table. That wasn’t necessary today. In fact, the only down side to our visit was the lack of diet root beer. They were out of syrup. It's a sad day for A & W - and for me. I had to make do with unsweetened iced tea.
Food Quality
The food was excellent. We ordered the combo meals of two fish/three chicken planks and two fish planks. Both came with fries and hush puppies. The fish/chicken combo also came with cole slaw. Of course, my husband ordered a side of free crumbs. These are literally the pieces of batter that fall off the fish. They're greasy, taste great and probably harden your arteries on sight.
Actually, that could be said for most of the Long John Silvers menu items. The clams, fish, shrimp, chicken and french fries are all deep fried in their special batter. It's all very good but not the best food for you.
In answer to the health issue Long John Silvers has a new line of healthy meals. These include steamed corn on the cob and vegetables. The side items go with the Freshside Grille fair which includes grilled tilapia, salmon and shrimp scampi that are available at participating locations. I took a few minutes to peruse the website. It was neatly ordered and responsive. I liked the user-friendliness. It was easy to find the menu, locator map and the nutritional information. A link to order gift certificates is now available online.
Service:
The service at the LaFollette location surprised me. We’ve not had the best luck with good service lately. In fact, I’d almost despaired of finding the combination of quality service and friendliness. The Long John Silver that we went to today gives me hope. Everyone was friendly and the service was great.
Maybe they’ll share those great customer-service tricks with the other restaurants in LaFollette?
