| lovehifi's Full Review: Traitor |
My better half decided to rent Traitor. What a great movie.
I didn't think I'd like it at first. I thought it would be a sympathy movie for would-be terrorists. It was nothing like that at all.
It starts out showing a young black child witnessing his father being blown to bits in a car bomb overseas. Then it moves to the child's adulthood, where Cheadl plays the part.
Cheadl is making bombs and such devices for hire. He's caught and placed in a foreign jail. The FBI tries to turn him, unsuccessfully.
Cheadl then connects with some real arab terrorists, who eventually want to use his skill for a huge attack on the USA.
Traitor is very interesting. There are some real twists and turns. You have to watch this movie to the end. The ending was great. I never saw it coming.
This movie intrigued me because it was so realistic. Usually, at some point in a film, the story becomes ridiculous or something happens that makes the story seem unbelievable. Not in Traitor. For once, the story stuck to realism all the way. That was a real treat.
When Cheadl is caught for making/selling explosives, he's sent to an Arabic prison, which is not like the prisons here. An FBI agent attempts to turn Cheadl by offering a deal for information. Cheadle refuses.
During Cheadle's stay in prison, he gets into a fight with other Arabic prisoners. Now, even though Cheadle is a trained fighter, there is no unrealistic fight scene. No agent with extraordinary fighting skills. They beat the crap out of him. But, he befriends another Arabic with terrorist ties.
They escape the prison with the help of a terrorist attack on the prison, as a distraction. Again, it looks very believable. Not the typical escape scene wherein some inept guard falls asleep or they escape with some ingenious method.
The terrorist use human bombers to commit suicide attacks. A planned attack is compromised due to a mistake. Cheadl then offers to go ahead and blow up a building using his knowledge of bombs and architecture rather than a suicidal Arab. It works. 8 people die. Cheadl is mad however, as he thought that wasn't a big enough death toll. The FBI see him on a video tape. He is now a very wanted man.
Then, Cheadl is brought in on a huge planned terror attack on the United States.
All of a sudden, Cheadl is meeting with a member of the FBI, who is the only one who knows what he is doing. Cheadl is sick over the fact people died due to his bombing of a building. He thought the building was empty. As it turns out, some the deaths were faked for his benefit.
Cheadl must then help deploy bombs to 50 terrorist in the USA who have lived here for years, like normal everyday citizens, just waiting for the order to blow themselves up.
In a chance meeting with his FBI contact, the contact is killed. Now, no one knows Cheadl is working undercover.
Cheadl attempts to undermine the huge terrorist attack as he is being smuggled out of the country by his terrorist friends. Is the terrorist attack stopped in time? You have to see it. The ending is far too good to give away.
The movie is depressing as the plot could almost be real nowadays. It is a bit scarry to think such movies might give crazy ideas to fanatics. It's frightening enough to worry about crime, let alone terror attacks.
This movie is definitely suitable for the whole family. While the suspense and intrigue were very real, this movie did not rely on cheap movie making tactics like nudity, excessive cursing or blood and guts. What makes Traitor rise above the average suspense/action film is the well written script and the story's adhesion to realism.
Traitor is a genuinely good movie. Plausible, interesting and it keeps you on the edge of your seat as you attempt to guess what's really going to happen. I would recommend Traitor to anyone. We both really enjoyed this film.
