42English’s Weather Write-Off - Are you Kidding? I Moved to New Hampshire!!!!
Dec 01 '05
The Bottom Line I just moved in the shadow of “the world’s worst weather” - what does that tell you?
1. Do you like a hot or cold climate?
Definitely a colder climate. I can enjoy the warmer seasons, but the heat will beat me faster than the cold will.
2. How do you deal with excessive heat?
Cool off in a lake or river now. Back in New York it was the pool or stay in the air conditioning.
3. How do you deal with excessive cold?
Rumpleminze! When thats not feasible Ill have a cup of coffee and maybe throw a shot or two in it.
4. Have you seen a tornado up close? Elaborate.
We were in Kissimmee in 1998 for the tornado outbreak there. We had driven up from my late father-in-laws house near Ft. Lauderdale late and were going to stay one night at a cheap motel on 192 before going to Disney World the next day. As we were driving up we could see the storm building in the dark, but we just thought we were heading into bad thunderstorms.
The motel we were staying at was just off the Florida Turnpike. We checked in, threw the sleeping kids in the bed and sat down to watch some TV before going to bed. The tornado warnings were up but we werent sure if it was for us or not because they kept talking about counties and we werent sure which one we were in.
Getting nervous, I told my husband to get the bicycles off of the car, because I was afraid that they would get caught hanging on the back like that. We put them in the back part of the room (ground level with an outside entrance) and I put a blanket and my pocketbook in the bathroom just in case we had to take refuge there.
A short time later the power went off, so now we didnt know what was happening. We thought it was just the storm knocking out power. Idiot that I am, I was looking out the window at the Turnpike and remarked to my husband wow, look at all the tractor trailers getting off - you could see the exit we had just gotten off of from our room. With nothing else to do the two of us went to bed.
The next morning we were awoken by the sound of helicopters. There was still no power. I went outside and could see them pretty close to our motel. It turns out the Ponderosa Campground - where most of the deaths occurred that night - was about a half mile or so from our motel. We checked out and tried to find a place for breakfast. As we drove down 192 we could see where the tornado had crossed 192. If we had been any later and/or chosen a motel further down the road we could have been in big trouble.
5. Have you experienced a hurricane? Elaborate.
Being on Long Island weve had our fair share - usually category 1s. I can remember swimming after a hurricane down at Long Beach in the mid 80s - we were young and insane, what can I tell ya! Recently we were in Katrina when it was a category 1 across southern Florida. It wasnt fun to be trapped in a condo with four kids and nothing to do, but I know we were much more fortunate than a lot of other people.
6. Have you ever been snowed in? If so, where and for how long?
I can remember as a kid a storm on Long Island where we didnt get plowed out for about 4 days. It was brutal - we used our sleds to go to the local market and get provisions such as milk and bread. Now being up in the mountains I can see having trouble getting out for a day or two but the snow removal is so much more sophisticated here. We were up in March when they had a brutal storm with 17 inches of snow and I was out driving around that night to the drugstore.
7. Are you afraid of thunderstorms?
Not usually. If I see those green looking clouds those will usually make me nervous. I cant wait for the first storm I see coming across the mountains.
8. Do you like rainy days or sunny days?
Sunny days, whether its sun on snow or sunny & clear.
9. Is your local weatherman usually spot on about the weather?
I usually watch The Weather Channel and theyre pretty accurate. In New York, we could always count on if they said there was going to be a lot of snow that there was really nothing to worry about and if they said we were going to get flurries or a dusting to be very worried. Havent figured out if the local weather up here (from Manchester over two hours away) is accurate or not.
10. On average, how lucky are you weatherwise on your vacations?
I would say fortunate. Okay, there have been tornadoes, a hurricane and the occasional blizzard
.
11. If you were a form of weather, what would you be?
My friends and family would probably say its a thunderstorm. I tend to build up and build up, then explode and once its all over Im back to sunny and bright.
12. What would the weather be like on your ideal day?
In the winter it would probably be a bright sunny day after a snowstorm. We had one of those last season when we took our kids up skiing to Wildcat mountain - it was just an awesome day and one Ill remember weather-wise for a long time to come.
In the summer I like a warm day, not too hot, that we can spend down at the lake or river and then a thunderstorm to cool it off in the evening right around dinnertime with it clearing after that so we can sit outside on my deck (with the mosquito magnet cooking real good).
