About one week after ordered an Onkyo TS-DX595 receiver from J&R, a charge for $49.22 appeared on my credit card statement. OK, I thought, I know the receiver was about $400, so that charge must be some sort of pre-shipment authorization. After waiting another 7 days, when I called to inquire about the status of my receiver, I was told that it was on back order. This fact was NOT disclosed to me when I placed my order. If it was, I would have purchased the receiver elsewhere. Clearly, J&R knew this and that's why they didn't tell me.
I inquired as to the $49.22 charge to my card. They told me it was for a VHS storage unit that I authorized to be shipped to an address in Hackensack, NJ. (I live in Atlanta.) When I objected to the erroneous charge, the rep insisted that I had authorized the transaction. "Don't you usually verify the order by phone when the "ship to" address is different than the billing address?", I asked. "Yes, we do. And you authorized the charge.", was the response.
Not only did I not authorize the charge, I DON'T EVEN OWN A VHS VCR having made the switch to DVD two years ago. I not only canceled my receiver order, but I demanded a refund of the $49.22. They told me they would research it.
Three weeks later, J&R still had not issued the credit and the customer service manager will not return my voice messages. I filed a dispute with my credit card company. Finally, after the credit company inquired and some 10 WEEKS after the erroneous transaction was posted, J&R corrected it.
