TheHorrorMan's Top 10 Horror Sequels

Apr 22 '06

The Bottom Line This is a list of the 10 best horror movie sequels in my opinion. Some may even be better than the original.

Out of every movie genre it can easily be said that horror films tend to have the most sequels made. The FRIDAY THE 13TH series alone has 10 sequels plus the original film. It seems almost common for a horror film to be followed up with a sequel or two if the original does well. Here is my list of the 10 best horror movie sequels in no specific order.

10 HALLOWEEN 4: THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS There are eight HALLOWEEN films to date all which, in my opinion, have something to offer for die hard fans. It is HALLOWEEN 4 though, that I have chosen for this list specifically because I believe it achieves a true Halloween feel much like John Carpenter's original. After the absence of Michael Myers in HALLOWEEN III, one can't help but to enjoy his return. There is a good new storyline as well that doesn't stray too far from the original.

9 EVIL DEAD II: DEAD BY DAWN EVIL DEAD II in many ways is superior to the original. The simple fact that half of the film only concerns one character by himself and keeps the viewer entertained shows that it is a well down horror flick. With laughs, gore galore, and great scares, I truly feel this is the film that made Bruce Campbell's Ash character the idolized hero he has become in the genre.

8 PHANTASM II This is another film which I feel more people will enjoy more than the original. With that said, the original PHANTASM is by far the better film, but PHANTASM II has more to offer in entertainment. The introduction of a new character, who like Mike from the original, dreams of the Tall Man, adds to the series a great deal along with the fact that Mike and Reggie are now on the hunt for revenge.

7 FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3 Here it is... the one where Jason gets the hockey mask. That alone should qualify it for this list. However, there is more to this movie than that. This is just as fun and campy as the first two of the series, yet it has more interesting characters and establishes a feel that series seems to keep up until PART VIII. This is the real Jason movie!

6 THE EXORCIST III: LEGION This is film is much different than the first, but is so much better than part 2. This time, the same demon from the original has entered the body of a serial killer known as Gemini and Lieutenant Kinderman is on the case. There are some scary images and jump scenes throughout.

5 WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE This is the next best thing to the original of the A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series. This time, the real Freddy Krueger, angry at the fact that he was killed off in part 6, return to kill the cast and crew of the ELM STREET films including Heather Langenkamp along with her son Dylan. Freddy has never been so scary prior or since.

4 SCREAM 3 That's right, I chose part 3 over the first sequel. I believe that this film has more to offer than SCREAM 2. This time, the cast of Stab 3 is being killed off one by one while Sydney, Gale Weathers, and Dewey try to figure out who is wearing the ghost mask once again. The back story is interesting and required viewing for fans of the first 2.

3 THE DEVIL'S REJECTS Quite possibly the best of all horror sequels to date, this follow-up to HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES is non-stop entertainment. It's raw, brutal, funny, scary, atmospheric, and the list goes on. This, so different than Rob Zombie's original, is yet so better!

2 CHILD'S PLAY 2 This sequel takes some of the qualities that made the original good and then adds more live Chucky on screen time. This time Andy Barclay is living in a foster home and Chucky has found him still after his body. The ending in the Good Guy doll factory is as entertaining as it gets.

1 HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II I may have saved the best for last with the exception of THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. HELLBOUND picks up right where HELLRAISER left off. Kirsty is now in a hospital under the care of Dr. Channard who in actuality is after the key to unlocking the lament configuration puzzle box. The labyrinth used to represent Hell is eerily dull and yet stunningly beautiful. There is more cenobite time and new characters. The ending is one that will not be forgotten. This is not only one of my favorite sequels, but one of my personal favorite films.
