LASIK is not the only option
Oct 13 '06
The Bottom Line Make sure you find the treatment and surgeon that is best for you regardless of cost. LASIK is great but make sure it is right for you.
While LASIK eye surgery has been very successful for most people and over a million Americans undergo the procedure every year, there are other options beside LASIK.
If you are over 40, LASIK often does not correct well enough for near vision. Consider a monovision correction, either with LASIK or CK possibly. Also consider Crystalens, ReStor, and ReZoom.
If you have a thin cornea, dry eyes, irregular corneas, or a high prescription, consider either an early cataract procedure with Crystalens or a phakic IOL like the Visian ICL.
While LASIK has worked well for many people, some people don't fit the mold. Beware of a LASIK surgeon that only performs LASIK. While they might advertise that they are a specialist, there our LASIK surgeons out there who have done over 20,000 procedures and are still capable of doing other surgical procedures.
While LASIK takes a great deal of skill, a really good surgeon will be capable of many different types of procedures.
Visit www.turnereye.com to read about many of the procedures that are available. Dr. Turner is a surgeon in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to tens of thousands of LASIK procedures, he performs a large variety of other FDA approved procedures for his patients who are not good candidates for LASIK. He does not suggest LASIK if there are better options.
