We took some friends from overseas to Amish Acres today. Living in Northern Indiana we figured this would be a great opportunity to give our friends an insight into a part of this nation's history.Admission was $ 7.95 each for the walking tour. The guide arrived late. His appearance did not match the historical setting around us. His description along the various stops of the tour seemed ill rehearsed and interrupted by frequent self corrections. After about 30 minutes we were ushered out of the main house and told the rest of the premises could be viewed as a self-guided tour. The presentation felt superficial and the length of the tour tailored towards maximizing the number of people that could potentially be processed. The old farmhouse, barns and various other buildings are in disrepair and need fixing up. The premises need better maintenance. The Amish Acres I saw, was not a well maintained, attractive facility that led to a better understanding of the Amish. If you go there, don't expect a historical site as I did, expect a commercial venture that is little more than a tourist trap.
