National Women's History Month Write Off

Feb 28 '08 (Updated Apr 01 '08)

The Bottom Line The contributions of women in art have been consistently overlooked and undervalued. This month is a time to discover and celebrate.

“Women’s Art: Women’s Vision” is the theme designated for the 2008 National Women’s History Month. I want to honor the originality, beauty, imagination, and multiple dimensions of women’s lives in a way that makes sense to me. I’m hosting a write off on Women’s Art with the hopes that this introduces each of us to a new artist.

Art? There are so many forms. Select an artist, review a book about the artist or review an exhibit if possible. Review a CD or musical composition by the composer or the performer. Art, for this review, can take so many forms including painting, tapestry, weaving, basketry, photography, dance, music, director, actress, sculpture, glass, stained glass, illustrator, performance art, stand-up comic, author, poet, essayist, quilting, landscape design, Ikebana, flower arranging—you’ve got the idea. Art is such a powerful form of expression and I’m excited that this year’s theme recognizes the artistic contributions of women.

The National Women’s History Month provides stories of several amazing women’s accomplishments. I know that many wonderful books can be found to introduce us to the artists, their art forms, and their lives.

While most of us have a favorite form of art (beyond writing), how well do we know the artists? I’m inviting you to take a little time this month to learn about an artist and to review her work. Not only will you discover and hopefully celebrate a women’s art form, but you will introduce it to all of us who read your review.

NWHM organizers remind us that discovering and celebrating these various forms will help expand our perceptions of ourselves and each other. They have selected this month to honor the originality, beauty, imagination, and multiple dimensions of women’s lives through art.

I’m inviting you to contribute. The rules are simple.

If you can review an exhibit or a performance, video or movie, dance or opera, if it’s in the database, review it but the object of the review should focus on the contributions of the female artist, the director, conductor, performer, playwright, singer, or dancer.

If you find a book that features the artist’s work or that tells about her life (biography or autobiography) review it. Don’t forget some of the amazing female artists and illustrators of children’s books. Review the book, but highlight the illustrator. You all know how to do this.

If you find some other creative option that is available in the database that highlights the female artist, review it.

As always:
Once reviewed, send me a link to your review so I can include it on the hopefully lengthy list or leave a link in the comments. (pestyside@gmail.com)

Mention this write-off in your review

Naturally everyone’s invited to contribute as many times as you want.

If you have artistic friends, invite them to Epinions so they can participate. National Women's History Month is March (every year) and this ends March 31.

For stories on the 2008 honorees, visit www.nwhp.org/whm/honorees.php. This is only a teeny list of potential artists.
