| artiste's Full Review: Micron Millenia MAX Series |
Max XP2 is a very fast computer with ordinary applications. It is powered by Athlon which is sometimes faster than the 1.7GHz Pentium 4 machine, (Max XS). The Athlon 4 offers better performance for the price compared to Pentium 4.
The Max XP2 when it is configured costs $2.367. It has an incredibly fast 6 MB GeForce 2 graphics card. This is great for users who are heavily into gaming. If not into gaming, the 32MB GeForce card should be adequate and you save $99. It is better for gamers to use a Pentium 4 processor anyway. In fact, Max XS with a Pentium 4 actually proves to be faster when it is configured identically to XP2.
Max XP2 is good for business users. The high end graphics card and the 19 inch Trinitron monitor is not needed that much. A 17 inch Trinitron monitor will save $150. Even if you use 128MB RAM and 40 GB hard drive the computer is a very fast and fully configured work horse. It comes with a DVD and CD-R/RW drive, a modem, and Microsoft Office 2000 Small business edition. This machine costs $1,854.
Max XP2 is a very fast computer. In fact it comes in as the second fastest after Compaq Presario 7000. Presario also uses a 1.3GHz Athlon chip. It also comes with a three year limited warranty and includes one year of on site service. You can call a toll free number for hardware support but it ends after fifteen days. New users should be warned that they may require more than fifteen days of support. The reason is that there is no setup, support or tutorial software. Windows Me may offer some help but more may be needed for XP2.
Max XP2 is fully configurable. Users don't have to buy speakers, graphics cards or other parts you that are not wanted. The only problem with Max XP2 is that it does not come with software for support and troubleshooting. Another problem to note is that MicronPC was sold by it's parent company recently (Micron Technology) to Gores Technology Group. This firm specializes in turnarounds. Micron PC has a good reputation for ten years for selling good and reliable computers. However, the sale raises doubts about the company being stable.
Overall, Max XP2 computer has some superior capabilities. However, it is lacking support software. Also the company has recently been sold. Questions are being raised as to whether Micron can offer quality service and support to it's customers.
