Some notes on the story Alice

Here’s a handy little guide to my obscenely lengthy story entitled Alice, a story in nine parts. It took me over a year to write it, and the result is more than 37,000 words of pure enjoyment, or lack thereof as the case may be.

The story is about a school teacher who has an affair with a man who is the father of one of her former students. I came up with the first few pages one day while sitting in a cafe in town, and I thought this idea seemed managable. But as the months wore on, it became clear the story was going to get too big with too many characters and situations. Alice is the main character, but we also have her friend, and her co-workers. Other characters also include the man she is going out with, as well as his ex-wife. Alice also has to deal with two troubled teenagers: Brittany, who is her boyfriend’s daughter, as well as another student. It took me 13 months to finally get the whole thing finished, although I’m sure a good editor could find all my glaring errors and chop the story’s length.
I have my doubts about some of the characters, especially the teenagers. I feel I made them just too sullen and negative and stereotypical. I wanted to make Brittany upset at the situation involving her father, but I wonder if she’s just a one-note character. I feel the same way about the other teenager in the story. I hoped to be able to depict school life through the eyes of the teachers and administration in a relatively believable way, but I don't know if I've suceeded.
I'm curious as to what you think about all of this.
Parts Two and Four have some hot, steamy love scenes - this may serve as a warning to you. Or not.
