My Top Ten Favorite Television Shows of All Time

Nov 02 '08

The Bottom Line All of the shows I listed are available of DVD now!

I really do not watch television all that much.  This is mostly because I find that most of the shows lack substance.  The comedy shows do not seem too funny to me, the suspense shows make me yawn, and dramas were really never that interesting to me in the first place.

There are some exceptions, however.  These are my favorite shows.  They are listed in no particular order.  These shows are shows that seem to always catch my attention when they are on TV.  If I should be flipping around channels and come to one of these shows, I will usually stop to watch.  In fact, I like these shows so much that I went out and purchased the series on DVD (for most of them).

So, here they are:

Avengers - This 1960's British action gem was way ahead of its time!  Featuring Mr. Steed and his female partners (either Cathy Gale,  Mrs. Peel, Tara King) the team always dealt with bizarre happenings and mysteries.

Secret Agent Man - Another show from Britain during the 1960's during the spy craze.  This show features the adventures of John Drake, and international man of mystery that always solves mysteries.  This show created a new genre in television - the spy show.

The Saint - Based on the stories of Leslie Charteris, yet another British spy show from the 1960's.  Simon Templer is the saint and he always seems to stumble on a damsel in distress or some mystery that requires help from above.

Fawlty Towers - A short run series of only 12 episodes that ran during the 1970's; show by show it is the funniest show I have ever seen.  It involves an inn keeper, in Britain, that gets involved in one mishap after another.  It will leave your sides splitting!

Star Trek - One of the greatest, if not the greatest, science fiction shows ever made.  The show follows the adventures of the crew of the star ship Enterprise as it makes its way around the galaxy.  It features Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Bones, and Scotty - and the rest of the crew.  Very original ideas and ahead of its time for a show from the 1960s.
Columbo - The cigar smoking detective, Lt. Columbo of the LA Police Department, always solves the case.  Very non-typical police detective work in a often humorous, definitely non-typical methods.  How does he find all those clues?

The Prisoner - Yet another (gulp) British show from the 1960's involving a spy that is being held against his will on a secluded island.  The most bizarre television show I have ever seen.  Follow the escape attempts of the prisoner, #6, as his keepers try to extract secret information from him.

I Dream of Jeannie - Another incredibly funny television show from the 1960's.  Major Nelson, a NASA astronaut finds a bottle containing a Jeannie in it, and once he frees her all the fun begins!  Never a dull moment!
The Twilight Zone - Lots of unique, strange stories of super-natural, bizarre happenings.  Always different stories, always interesting.  A lot of great actors can be seen in the seemingly hundreds of episodes that were produced during the long time run.

All in the Family - The most incredible family in America!  Archie, Edith, Meathead and Gloria.  Watch as the family wrestles with conflicting points of views and issues of the day back in the 1970's.  Funny, thought provoking, and well acted by all.
These are my top ten shows.  Other shows I thought about adding include The Addams Family, Cheers, MASH, Seinfeld, and the Brady Bunch.  However, these other shows sometimes had some pretty poor episodes, or became repetitive, or just ran too long.  Thanks for reading my review and best wishes for a nice day!
Mike
