For Barbara, the Cancer Research Institute

Mar 17 '09

The Bottom Line Please think of the Red Cross in your local communities.  For this write-off, I'd like to nominate something that hits home to many of us in this community right now.

Initially, I was going to do an essay on disaster assistance and advocate for the American Red Cross.  They are almost always in need of funding and do a tremendous amount of work right in your own communities that you probably don't know about.  Anytime people are displaced by a fire, they are right there with hotel vouchers to help people have a place to go, among other things.  I have witnessed this first-hand.

However, with it prominent in my mind about what one of our very popular and much loved long-time members of the site is going through, I would like to nominate the Cancer Research Institute for the write-off.

You can get many of the particulars about it at the Charity Watch website: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=3417

It is one of the highest-rated Cancer charities around.  The ratio of funds that go into actual works by the charity versus overhead and fundraising is excellent.  Their primary focus is funding research, mostly in the areas of immunology.

On a personal note of my own, three years ago, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.  It was at such an advanced stage by the point she actually finally went to the doctor for it, I really didn't have a lot of hope.  In the fall of 2006 she underwent a mastectomy and began radiation therapy.  I had family members come up to see her because I was resigning myself to what I thought was going to be inevitable.

One her most recent check-up, she is still cancer-free.  I believe a lot of the credit for that goes to the advances in research made through the years.  Without it, at the advanced stage that she finally sought treatment, I feel even as little as ten years ago her outcome would have been much different.

If Barabara's family has a charity they would feel was better suited, I would gladly nominate that one.  Perhaps the French Foreign Legion??? :-)
