From the Desk of elvisdo — The 2009 Funny Pages Write-Off
Apr 20 '09 (Updated Jul 31 '09)
The Bottom Line This write-off is designed to fight injustice, to right that which is wrong and to serve all mankind.
The first Saturday in the month of May has become a growing tradition in the comic book industry. On May 2nd, 2009, the comic book industry will once again celebrate Free Comic Book Day for the eighth year. This annual promotion, which started back in 2002, is designed by the North American comic book industry to help bring in new readers into comic book stores. This is also done in conjunction with a new comic book movie release that same week and what better way to kick it off than with Hugh Jackman's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Jackman has also endorsed Free Comic Book Day with a video and the importance of comics in fighting illiteracy. Here is a transcript of what he says:
“We all know comic books are fun, but they’re also a really fantastic way to captivate the attention of young readers and set them off on a life-long love of reading. Please help join the fight against illiteracy, and recommend to kids to just go into comic book stores and grab their free comics.”
The purpose of this event is threefold: first, to introduce new readers to the medium; second; calling back former comic book readers; and last, to thank the current comic book buyers for their support.
Major publishers produce a special edition to give away as a promotion for both the company and the characters that they publish as they try to attract new readers into the fold. There are an array of comic books available, ranging from superheroes from DC and Marvel, to traditional ones like Archie and Disney, and even Manga and other independent publishers.
Some noted titles available this year are:
• Blackest Night #0 and DC Kids Mega Sampler from DC Comics • The Avengers from Marvel Comics • Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Aliens/Predator from Dark Horse Comics • Savage Dragon #148 from Image Comics • Bongo Comics Free-For-All from Bongo Comics • Archie Presents: The Mighty Archie Art Players from Archie Comics • Disney/Pixar's Cars from Boom Studios • Transformers Animated/G.I. Joe from IDW Publishing and much, much more.
Last year I started The Funny Pages Write-Off to much success. I couldn't believe the number of submissions I received. Obviously, it's a no-brainer to do it again. Quite simply: write a review related to comic books and comic strips. Notice I say comic books and not just super-heroes. It can be about comic books (duh), movies, toys, clothes, television shows, cartoons, novels, video games, and anything else you can think of. Did you ride the Superman roller coaster at Six Flags? That totally counts for this.
Even better, find obscure references that mention anything about comic books. For example: The movie Office Space implements a quick-rich scheme based on the machinations that happened in Superman III.
From now until the end of July will this write-off be in effect. Have fun with it and give me a shout in the comments section if you do participate. I’ll list and link your review(s) to this page.
Okay, so the real reason for this write-off is to give me an excuse to continue writing what I already love. Like I need an excuse for that.
