How to Make Soccer Cleats Last (Steps to Easy Clean Up Care)

Jun 14 '09 (Updated Jun 30 '09)

The Bottom Line How to Care for Soccer shoes can be fun and easy.

Short & Quick Version of Care:

All it takes to clean them up is some gentle or mild soap (laundry detergent or dish soap), water, old (or new cheap one) toothbrush (or hand brush), and a rag. I recommend making half of a dish pan full of soapy water and use the rag on the upper first, then when done use the toothbrush on the cleats to remove the dirt and any other crud from the bottom of the soccer cleats.

Detailed Version of Proper Care:

Rinse lightly or clean off the side of shoe; however, in extreme cases you may want to take the shoes outside and knock excess and I do not personally recommend cleaning off a lot of dirt into your sink or dishpan as it is makes cleaning the shoes take longer. Tread of shoe should be rinsed free of dirt or mud or debris to keep the rubber of the shoe from dry rotting such as tires on vehicles if they are dirty for a long time.

If you can only clean them inside at least clean the shoes in and / or a dish washing pan or a five gallon bucket if you have one handy.

Take out shoe laces and wash them in mild or gentle soap such as regular laundry detergent. If that does not help the white shoe laces then you can bleach them shortly approximately 15 minutes at the longest because bleach eats away a the fibers. As a side note the shoe laces will not last as long when bleached, so you might want to purchase an extra set of white laces in the case of breaking. Breaking has happened to me about a couple of times (and both times it has happened while I was Officiating Sports), so that is the reason I recommend using mild or gentle soap or laundry detergent without bleach or alternative bleach (also known as Chlorine Free Bleach).

Now you should be ready to clean the shoe upper. Read carefully as the directions will vary by the material i.e. leather, synthetic, and suede.

Leather should be cleaned either by some preferably Kiwi saddle soap or if not use a damp rag with some mild soap.

Synthetics can be cleaned using a damp rag with mild soap.

Suede should be cleaned by Kiwi suede cleaner only after using a suede brush to get the loose dirt off and out of the suede.

I recommend using water proofer or stain repellent on the soccer cleats to keep them from wet on the inside, so you do not end up having to throw out from getting funky or rotting away.

I clean soccer cleats up after each time out on the grass field especially after every game that I am acting as a Sports Official, since I am required to maintain a neat appearance. And with doing this I have had a pair of soccer cleats that lasted a little more than a five years.
