I picked Airtouch years ago because when I quizzed all my friends with phones and took note of who's calls to me were often dropped Airtouch came out on top. They claimed they covered more areas than any other cell phone company and seemed to fulfill that claim.
Since then Verizon has taken over Airtouch and I've not found any change in coverage although they've tightened up the calling plans to give you less service for more money - but hey, what business hasn't done that over the last few years.
Sometimes I’ve found a calling plan that will give me more minutes for less money through another carrier but I’ve stuck with Verizon because they truly do cover more areas than any other company out there. After all, what good are 100 more minutes if you can’t make or receive calls when you need to?
I live in the Orange County, CA area and the only areas that I’ve found I can’t make or receive calls are the Turtlerock, Tustin hills and north county hills. I’m even able to use my phone in the Laguna Canyon area which is notorious for being difficult on cell phones.
When I’ve traveled in MI and TX all calls were able to reach me with the exception of Frankenmouth, MI and some areas of Houston, TX. And with the National Calling Plan traveling with my phone is cost-effective and easy. No more arranging to be placed on Roam, contacting local services in each area I'm traveling in ...
When Verizon first took over Airtouch I was extremely disappointed with their customer service. I called with a question about how to pick up messages on my new phone and was told to "read the manual" when I had already told the rep I was away from home and had received a message marked URGENT. Well I'm happy to say that over the past few years their customer service has improved although I still sometimes receive conflicting answers from different reps, but at least they're nicer and sound more professional. It's much more satisfying to be given bad news by someone who has a smile in their voice, don't you think?
In an age when it's difficult to actually reach a business by phone (most refer you to their web page) Verizon gives it's customers an easy to navigate phone menu with very short queues.
I would recommend jotting down the name of any rep you deal with so that if you find later they gave you wrong info you have something to back you up. I would also recommend double-checking on anything that is really important to you or sounds too good to be true as I've often received conflicting information from different reps. And if you don't like what you hear from one store, call another. I was able to take my defective phone in and receive a new phone with all my info transferred onto it from one store, when I was told by the store I purchased it from that I would have to leave my phone for 10-14 days with no loaner! Ouch! So glad I decided to test my luck at another Verizon store before accepting that news.
