| carrera206's Full Review: Apple Flat Panel iMac 700MHz G4 / 15-in. TFT / 40G... |
This new iMac is terrific. The flat panel display is sharp with no significant abberations. The design of this product is great and the flat-panel does seem to hang in mid-air. The arm that holds the flat-panel display can be adjusted so to position or swivel the display to virtually any viewing position.
As with other Apple products, the new iMac seems to exude quality and is extremely well built.
The machine comes with the excellent NVIDIA GForce2 MX graphics processor, which is great for games and other 3D applications.
As one can imagine, with such a small enclosure there is not room enough within the computer's housing to allow any upgrades other than increasing RAM and the installation of a Airport (wireless networking) card.
I do wish that Apple would begin providing their systems with a multi-button mouse with a scroll wheel, but this is a small detail that can be solved by purchasing a 3rd party solution.
Product Specifications:
256MB SDRAM - 1 DIMM
Keyboard/Mac OS X - U.S. English
40GB Ultra ATA drive
DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX w/32MB DDR graphics
Mac OS X & Mac OS 9 installed
Apple Keyboard
Apple Pro Mouse
Apple Pro Speakers
Performance seemes quite snappy. The G4 processor and the Nvidia graphics card combine to make Mac OS X feel fast and fluid.
The new iMac will be available in three configurations. The top-end model, at $1,799, comes with an 800MHz G4, 256MB of RAM, a 60GB hard drive, and the SuperDrive, a CD-RW/DVD-R combo drive previously available only on Apple's Power Mac line. The midrange model, carries a $1,499 price tag and includes a 700MHz G4, 256MB of RAM, a 40GB hard drive, and a combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. The cheapest iMac, which won't be available until March, will cost $1,299--like the original Bondi blue iMac. This model will include the 700MHz G4, 128MB of RAM, a 40GB hard drive, and a CD burner.
Bundled software includes Mac OS X 10.1.2 as the default operating system, plus Mac OS 9.2.2 for older Mac software. Productivity software includes AppleWorks and Quicken Deluxe 2002.
In short a terrific computer!
