The Bottom Line: Great cheap system for small spaces with most of the bells and whistles. Good enough to say, "I have a home theatre!"

| suilobo's Full Review: Sony DAV-S300 |
If you're reading this review then you've done more research into home-theatre-in-a-box systems than I did before purchasing the Sony DAV-S300. Can't really say I regret getting this particular system though.
First the drawbacks (in case any of these things bug you enough so you won't waste your time reading the rest of this review):
1. There is no component out on this system. Almost all DVD players nowadays have component out and you'd expect it on something from Sony (even the Playstation2 has it!), but nope this system only has S-Video and composite out. Using a decent S-video cable doesn't result in a bad picture though.
2. It doesn't have the zoom feature like some other DVD players. I've never tried it so I don't know what I'm missing. Sounds like an interesting feature though.
3. Doesn't play MP3, SVCDs, CDRs. This model came out before it became popular to have all those formats supported by DVD players from brand-name companies. Oh well, DVDs sound and look better than those formats anyways.
4. The speaker stands for those 4 little speakers (the fifth goes on top of the TV) are expensive! I paid $240 CDN for two pairs from the Sony Store (everyone else was sold out!).
Now for the good stuff:
1. This is the ideal system for a small place like mine. I live in a small condo so I don't need something with a lot of power (or at least the neighbors tell me so) and this system can suitably fill my small room with sound. The system is also small so it doesn't take up much space in my little entertainment unit. The speakers are tiny and are fairly discreet in a small room setting.
2. It supports Dolby Digital and DTS. This means it sounds better. Obviously I'm not an audiophile (or I wouldn't have gotten this system) so that's all I know.
3. Plays all my DVD movies well. I've tried the Matrix, MIB, T2, Fight Club (all the great guy movies with explosions and such) and they play and sound great. No pauses, no stutter, and it looks good on my JVC 32" D-Series TV.
4. It's a Sony. It looks nice, the remote is well designed and so is the unit itself. There's even a little joystick thingy on the unit that I find really cool. I never use it though and I don't see why any one would unless they lose their remote or sit REALLY CLOSE to the TV. Set-up was simple too. Plug in the speakers, plug into TV, plug in power and there you go. Hardest part was running the speaker wire around the room (there's enough for a small room).
