| supahonda's Full Review: Team Fortress Classic |
Team Fortress Classic, AKA: TFC, is an amazing add on, or modification for Half-Life. When it was first released, it was a groundbreaking multiplayer experience. It actually encouraged teamwork. There are so many different places and ways you can play. You can go capture a flag, or try to release nerve gas to kill the other team. The possibilities are endless. You can be 9 different classes, or characters, and each one had different skills. This will be expalined in the paragraph below. Right now, many new patches are being released, but soon Valve and Sierra will stop the patches and TF2 will come out! I can't wait!
Characters/Classes
There are 9 different classes:
Scout = fast, low health & armor, crappy weapons
HW Guy = Slow, high health & armor, amazing gun
Soldier = Fairly slow, medium health and can shoot rockets
Spy = Fast, medium health, can disguise as enemy team
Engineer = Medium speed and health, can build stationary
rotating turrets called sentry guns
Medic = fast, good weapons and can heal your team or
infect/poison the other team
Sniper = medium speed and armor, can zoom in on enemy with
high power rifle. One powered up shot to the head
usually kills anyone. My personal favorite.
Pyro = medium everything, can shoot fire
Demo-man = medium speed, armor & health. shoots pipe bombs.
My personal favorite class is the engineer because it is fun to put sentry guns and watch them kill everyone. I also like the sniper, as he is the best long range class for when you don't feel like getting your hands dirty.
Graphics
TFC is based on the Half-Life engine, so obviously, the graphics are good. Basically, if you have ever played Half-Life, you know what the graphics are like, and this game doesn't make any imporvments on them. The game features nice facial textures and wall textures. The physics are handled great by the Half-Life engine, and everything moves smoothly. Guns look realistic and are well detailed. Everything moves smoothly and I have no real complaints in this section.
Sound
The only downfall of the game. The sound is awful. The gunshots don't sound real, most of the time the sound will stick and you can never understand what the voice says in the game. Also, I found that the sound is crackly most of the time and never really clear. And its not my computer, as I just purchased a brand new sound system, including a sub-woofer.
Cheaters
There are so many different types of cheaters in TFC. The first is called the camper. This isn't really cheating, but it ruins the game anyway. Whenever you die, you come back to life in a place called respawn. Campers wait outside respawn and as soon as you open the door, they kill you. The second type of cheater is the speeder. They have a special cheat that allows them to run faster than everyone. Really annoying. The third type of cheater (well not really cheating, just annoying) is the spammer. They just keep posting messages, bugging anyone who is trying to play. The people at Sierra should have put in an ignore feature (maybe they did, but I searched for it and couldn't find it).
Gameplay
If you have played a online, FPS, multiplayer game before, there are no real suprises in TFC. There are hundreds of maps for you to play on (my favorite is turkeyburgers), with new maps being created by players each day. There are also a bunch of different multiplayer concepts. There is the basic "capture the flag", but there is also just a fun deathmatch, secure the waypoints, plus much more. My favorite type of game to play is called MurderBall, with includes 4 teams fighting for a soccer ball. Whomever has this soccer ball gains points every 3 seconds (I think). So the object of this game is to get the soccer ball!
Basically, TFC is awesome online, and there are always new maps and people for you to play, so just let loose and have fun.
BTW: There is no single player game, unless you start a lan game, but there are no bots for you to play against or anything like that.
Overall
I also found that with each patch Valve puts out, there is more and more cheating and the game gets worse. Now Valve is starting to test stuff on TFC players (classes, jump models) and see how we react for their upcoming game, TF2.
Oh well, I can live with it, becuase in the end, the pros outway the cons ten-fold!
TFC is a groundbreaking multiplayer game, and its free, so look for it today! All you have to do is buy Half-Life, and you can download it from all major download sites, with my favorite being FilePlanet.com You may have to sign up for an account from FilePlanet.com but it is the greatest video gaming site for updates and patches, so it is worth every second it takes.
