| paulchandler's Full Review: Atari Lynx |
I remember when I purchased my Lynx, it was a choice between the NEC TurboExpress ($300+), Gameboy, or the Atari Lynx. I already had a gameboy but it wasn't color and the first generation units were a tad uncomfortable on the hands. The TurboExpress is what I really wanted, but it was far too expensive.
I remember just how ahead of its time the graphics were. Not as good as the TurboExpress, since it was a full console, but capable of basic flat-shaded 3-d, sprite animation, and decent multi-channel sound. no bleeps, but actual 8-bit samples.
the game cartridges are really cool. they are super thin, can fit many in your pocket. the multi-player mode was great, since you could keep adding units together if the game supported it. i *think* slime-world works up to 8-lynx's. too bad it wasn't as popular as the gameboy, or else multi-player games might have caught on.
the second generation units were sold with a matching padded carrying case and a/c adaptor, which was a nice touch.
the most infuriating the i remember about the units was it's tendency to get dust/dirt/chunks behind the plastic screen protector. it takes 6-AA batteries, which adds up in costs. the a/c adaptor helps, but it's not very "portable" then. its battery life is poor, because it still used a back-lit LCD. i hate the new reflective ones... can't play in the dark.
