:Background:
I, being a skateboarder, have had a couple of these little miracles pass through my hands. I thought they were the best skateboard magazine ever, packed with ton's of photo's, pro interviews, product reviews at a low low price.
:The break down:
Tranworld Skateboarding magazines are manufacter and published by the skateboard company Transworld, www.skateboard.com.
Those of you that don't have a clue of what skateboarding is, it's a sport in which a board, referred to as a deck, is attached to wheels with trucks. Skateboarding is usually reviewed to as a creative and artistic output. Other's think skateboarding is for punks that wanna be different and destroy property. I say, those people don't get the concept of skateboarding.
The only reason so many skateboarders are see in the street's are because there aren't enough skateparks around to fill their needs. I hope this explains skateboarding enough for you to understand.
:The Mag:
The lastest issue, that I acquired today, was referred to as the interview issue. Being the Interview Issue, this added over 35 quality interviews from the top pros.
The Chapters/Section were broken up into:
GasBag Pg.12 - GasBag gives you all the usual ramblings about the whole mag. Since this is the Interview Issue, it talks about the 36 interviews and how they came to finding all of the top pro's to interviews them.
Litterbox Pg.28 - Litterbox is a section based on people that write in to Transworld. Transworld usually puts them in, and then pokes fun at them.
Volume Pg.60 - Volume is all of the music reviews in the magazine. Mostly Rock and Punk-Rock. About 9 or 10 revies a month.
Most of the product reviews don't give a price, or a place to buy them, but they tell everything about the album , or the song their reveiwing.
Personally I think the reviews are too short, they tell some, but not enough information about the product.
Tangent Pg.96 - Tangent is usually a "spotlight" on an upcoming event, or one that's already happen. This issue was the Tampa Pro 2002, an annual contest in Tampa, Florida.
10 Top 5 Pg.108 - Ten Top Five is when Transworld picks a skater and asks them 10 questions and the skater has to pick the top 5 things to the answer.
This issues questions were, Best Skaters of All Time, Best Surfs of All Time, Best Books, Best Albums, Best Songs, 5 Thin'g you couldn't be without, Best Films, Best Skate Spots, Best Style, and the Best Pools to skate
Any 1 thing pg.110 - Anyone Thing is when Transworld pick 3 pro-skaters, and poll's them on certain topics.
The topics this issue were Have you hugged your skateboard today?, Have you ever caught your self saying, "The kids these dayd,"?, Is the United States the center of the skateboardin Universe?, Do you still appreciate getting free skate stuff?, and Do you know how to play a musicical instrument, well enought to impress other people?
Matt Hensley Pg.126 - A short interview with Matt Hensley, with a couple of pictures. They mostly talk about the last three months of Matt's career in skateboarding.
Spike Jonze Pg.128 - Another short writing/interview on Spike Jonze, a photographer in the sport of biking and skateboarding.
Relapse Pg.172 - Relapse is a barrage of all of classic reviews that just get confirmation here. The list spans from over the past 15 years.
Interviews Pg.181 - Pg.400 - The interviews are from all of the top pro's, Gonz, Lopez, Peters, Schaaf, Oyola, Bourne, Rattray, Pushead, Glifberg, Evans, Cadriel, Bork, Ellis, Kalis, Heddings, Appleyard, Anderson, Ellington, Humpston, Adams, Templeton, Olson, Steamer, Cambell, Nunn, Iannucci, Godoy, Duffy, Strubing, Sarmiento, Partanen, Barbee, Friedman, Carroll and Reed.
The interviews usually span from around 15 questions. The interviews are mostly about, where were you in the last couple months, what kinda board do yoiu ride, who are you sponsered by and so on. The pro's usually reply with a few lines of insipirational information. USUALLY
Check Out Pg.412 - The checkout is an interviews on an up and coming skateboarder who is young and not usually reconignized very much.
Last Words Pg.414 - Last words are a few last words from a top skater, this issue it was Tony Alva. The questions spanned form The Last Book you read, to the Last Time oyu got ripped off.
What I Liked
Probably my favorite thing in the whole magazine was all of the Interviews. Most of my favorite skaters were in the interviews, like Adrian Lopez, and Ed Templeton. I also like all of the music reviews in Volume. It keeps me informed to what everyone's listening to.
Stats
Page Length
This certain issue, the interview issue, is packed full of over 350+ pages of pictures, interviews, and random ramblings.
Table of Contents
Every table of contents in all of the Transworld Magazine's will make you think, wow that was cleverly, creative. How'd they think of that? It will baffle you til' you forget about it.
Ad's
All of the ads that are advertised in Transworld, have something to do with skateboarding, from Decks to Clothing, mostly everything's advertised.
I'd saw there's about an ad every 2 - 4 pages, but to the local skater their just pictures and the displaying of the logo, not something to skip over.
Impressions
When I saw this Interview Issue at the store, it surprised me that it was so long, 350+ pages. That made me really want to buy it to see what could fill up 350 pages. At the point I was thinking that, I aslo saw it was the interview issue, and that sealed the deal
Conclusion
In conclusion, I think that everyone who is intrested in any type of magazine should check out Transworld Skateboarding Magazine's for their creativeness, price and the art of photographs. $3.99 in the US, $4.99 in Canada.
To subscribe to Transworld, goto http://www.skateboarding.com and go under Subscribe.
The ususal subscription is $20 for 12 months of issues plus a free skate tool or shirt.
