Overview
I chose DBUYS.com to purchase a Sony MiniDV camcorder after reading reviews of a number of the online electronics retailers here at Epinions. I figured they would be pretty good and would save me money, so I called them up and placed my order. I ordered the Sony DCR-TRV18 for $612 (it sells for $799 in stores), an extra battery for $97 and requested overnight shipping for $59.90. The man who took my phone order was not overly friendly, however he was interested in trying to sell me additional accessories for my camera. First he asked me if I wanted tapes for the camcorder at least three times, each time I politely declined. Then he asked me several times if I wanted the UV filter lens for $20, and each time I again declined. He kept telling me that without the UV filter I would surely damage the camera's lens, which was very expensive to repair. I kept declining and he eventually stopped asking me if I wanted to buy the UV filter lens. Next he asked me I wanted to buy a separate battery charger. I own a Sony digital camera that uses the same type of battery and have had no problem charging the battery while it was inside the camera, and I thought that the same would hold true for the camcorder. If Sony wanted you to charge the battery outside of the camera, they would have included an external charging unit. After several minutes of the salesman telling me that my camera would quickly overheat and be damaged if I were to charge the battery while it was inside the camera, I started to doubt my initial thoughts. Maybe he was right, I wanted to protect my investment. It still did not make complete sense in my mind that charging the battery while it was inside of the camera would damage it, but the salesman was very convincing. I decided to buy the external charger for $67. I asked the salesman if it was a Sony product and he said yes. He was very quick to end the phone call, took my name, address, and payment info and said he would e-mail me with the tracking number. My order would go out either that night or the next day. Right before he hung up, I asked him to repeat what I had ordered (he had not done it) and give me the total amount to be charged to my card. He quickly reviewed my order, which included the UV filer lens (despite my telling him numerous times that I did not want it), so I corrected him, I had not ordered the lens. He gave me a total of $812 and hung up before I could tell him that the total did not sound correct. $612 for the camera, $97 for the battery, $67 for the charger and $59.90 for overnight shipping added up to $835.90, not $812. I figured he had added incorrectly and waited for my new camera.
My Order
The next day my camera arrived at my door. I was thrilled with the speed in which they filled my order and found my camera to be in perfect condition. However, there was a UV filter lens in my order, and I had indeed been charged for it, even though I told the salesman several times that I clearly did not want it. The extra battery was exactly what I wanted and I was pleased with that, it was the Sony brand item. The external charger that was sent to me was for analog camcorder batteries (I had purchased a digital camcorder) and was not a Sony product, even though the salesman told me it would be. It was a Friday and they close at 4 or 4:30pm, so I would have to call back on Monday to get a return authorization number. When I called on Monday, it took a few minutes before the woman I spoke with would give me an RA # (they will not accept a return if you do not have one and you must return the item within 7 days). I explained to her that I had been charged for and shipped an item that I clearly stated several times that I did not want. The other item I was returning was not even what I ordered. They recommend that you insure all returned items and ship them first class mail, so I asked to be reimbursed for my return shipping expenses (which were over $12.00) She told me to write a letter and that I would have to wait and see. Normally I would not request that my return shipping expenses be reimbursed, but it was not my fault that I had to ship these items back to them. If I had indeed ordered these items and then changed my mind I would be willing to foot the return shipping bill. However, their salesman slipped an item in my order that I did not want and did not authorize him to charge me for and sent me another item that was of no use to me. I did get my $87 refunded back to my credit card, but had to eat the return shipping costs.
Overall
While I was thrilled with the great price for the camcorder, I was unhappy that I was shipped and charged an item that I clearly told the salesman I did not want. I was also disappointed by the fact that they could not figure out that a digital camcorder purchase would need a digital camcorder battery charger to go with it, not an analog battery charger. After I received my camcorder from DBUYS.com, I did some more research on it and found out that overheating while charging a battery is NOT a problem. After charging the battery inside of the camera dozens of times in the three weeks since making this purchase, I found that the camera did not get hot at all, like the DBUYS.com salesman said it would do, and realized that it was just a way for him to sell me overpriced off-brand accessories that I really did not need. While I got a great deal on the camcorder, I was not pleased at all with having items slipped into my order and not being reimbursed for return shipping charges that I incurred through no fault of my own. If you use DBUYS.com, just buy the item you want and skip the accessories, ask them to repeat your order and look at your invoice carefully when your shipment arrives. An idea might be to tape record your conversation when you place your order over the phone (make sure you tell them that you are recording the conversation), then if they slip in things that you did not order, you have proof to back up your claim. I am not an attorney, nor do I know the legality of doing this, but this would be the only way you have to prove that you did not order the items they seem to slip in so many of their orders.
