Pros: Excellent compatibility: PC/MAC ready; no "bugs" in -the USB h/w; or -the s/w
Cons: Not tested the 32bit capability due to my graphics card limitations
The Bottom Line: Excellent after sales service network.(and why should you require it anyway?)

| less_rocknroll's Full Review: Hewlett Packard HP ScanJet 5300C Flatbed Scanner |
Hello! First things first: lets kill all the recommended review points: Scan s/w:Oh, yes, the HP precision scan s/w is *simple*
Installation? I am smiling. it was a breeze: s/w before h/w as HP recommended.
Image editing? Adobe Photodeluxe (business edition), another winner.(maybe i'll review it later)
Connection? I used a USB port, but parallel was available too
why a scanner? I use it for scanning my 35mm personal photos, docs, etc. What a wonderful gift to one's friends and relatives -any season!
That's right, ladies and gentlemen!... I saw scanners reviewed in PC World, India way back in Feb., 2000. (perhaps a review of another genius group later) After frequently reading advertisements, in the media, I bought it in Feb.,2001. Before you go away, please note that the price I have given are approximate India-ex-retail showroom price and include India import duties: your price will be much lower, depending on your country. I preferred the self installation method, however, don't be afraid to ask the dealer to install it if you prefer.
Above all, it arrived factory fresh in the manufacturer's original sealed packaging... something all PC and equipment manufacturers should emulate. I installed it on my self assembled PC... no techie knowledge required. True to promise, the unit performed without a hitch. Some of my friends have USB digital cameras tell me their PCs refuse to shut down when their cameras are connected. Not my HP!
There are absolutely no such hardware (h/w) problems.
Other friends who bought unbranded equipment(not scanners) from some far eastern manufacturers found all the features didn't work. Not on my HP! A little higher investment, but worth it. You probably won't be able to locate the same model at a HP retailer, but that shouldn't prevent you from buying the latest USB2, 48bit scanner. Try to use the scanner on a (equivalent mac) PIII with 20GB hard disk or higher. If you require only occasional scanning of pics, then a web connection will do to send pics by email.
I tested the scanner on a self assembled PC, Win98SE, with Internet Explorer 6..(etc...). I have not tested the scan to web feature. However, 24bit color depth that I tested on was excellent. When I install the latest VESA and updated graphics card, I will update this review.
PLEASE NOTE:MY REVIEWS ARE ONLY MY EXPERIENCE WITH USAGE 0F PRODUCTS AND ARE EXPRESSED WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY OF ANY KIND.
I certainly hope members will find my reviews useful for their purchase decisions.
