Tall Girl's Guide to Pants

Feb 15 '01

The Bottom Line Places to purchase pants for tall females (what a concept)

It seems that these inane "What You Should Know . . ." and "How To . . ." topics have been the source of hilarious and sarcastic reviews, and this topic should be no different. BUT (there's always a "but," isn't there?), I think I may actually have some serious and hopefully helpful advice for the pants shopping crowd.

I am tall (about 5'10", to be exact). 5'10" is a sizable height for a female, if sizable means clothes shopping can be a major pain in the butt (puritan Epinions won't let me say what I wanted to say).

Buying pants can be impossible for a tall girl. It seems that the fashion mavens think all tall women resemble their streamlined and elegant fashion drawings. You know what I'm talking about, renderings of models with dazzling, toothpick-thin legs and no rib cage to speak of. Well, I'm not fat (nor am I zaftig, pleasantly plump, or any other annoying euphemism), but I am truly BIG-BONED. Imagine that! Yes, the heinous term applies to me. Even when I weighed 130 lbs. at the height of 5'8" a few years ago, the smallest size I could fit into was a 9.

So, being a tall and, ahem, large-framed chick, I have encountered numerous problems acquiring pants that were long enough and big enough. To help any of my fellow tall ones, here are a few places with jeans that will actually be long enough. Luckily (and surprisingly), most of these stores are available nationwide and are very popular due to massive ad campaigns. I doubt any of you have never heard of the Gap.

Old Navy and the Gap
Well, I recently went into an Old Navy store for the first time. I didn't realize the place was a warehouse of cotton T's and denim strewn around like the aftermath of Hurricane Camille, but nonetheless, I was looking for jeans, not neatness.

I found some cool, boot cut jeans. (Tip: Boot cut looks great on everyone. I am not a fan of tapered, especially on taller women.) I found my size but was so daunted by the store's atmosphere that I bought them without trying them on. They were long enough, but methinks Old Navy's sizes run a tad small. I suggest buying a size larger than you normally would when shopping there. Or at least try on the pants before leaving, unlike shop-phobic me.

Old Navy carries up to size 18-20.

Okay, on to Old Navy's sister (and more high-end) store, the Gap. The Gap has just about every style of pants you could want. The jeans I bought there fit as well, and they did not run as small as Old Navy.

Lerner New York
In my opinion, the mecca of tall pants. I have bought size tall jeans here, and they were actually too long. Wow, that's a major feat with all things considering. Lerner New York carries sizes from 2-16.

Check 'em out; Lerner usually has some great sales going on too.

Tall Girl
Yes, there's actually a store called Tall Girl. There's one about thirty minutes from my home. As the name suggests, you will find clothing for taller women here. It is a bit more youth-oriented though. The store has sizes ranging anywhere from 6-22.

Well, there you have it. A few stores to find pants that fit with ease. I am as surprised as you are, and I am sure there are more. Now, if only I could find some stylish and well-fitting shoes . . .
